The Hollowmen: Year Of The Scarecrows

A few of the many photos that I'll be posting on my site in the coming week. The first two photos are Polaroids which were taken by Bean (she took a bunch so I'll be putting those up on the site as well). Speaking of Bean...I honestly couldn't have pulled this year's haunt off without her. When I was trying to develop a theme for the 2008 display, I was having a very hard time coming up with something that would be fresh and interesting and different - not even going to mention some of the silly ideas that I tossed around. Then one day she asked me if I'd ever consider doing a display with a varied assortment of scarecrows. It seemed so natural and obvious. Thus were born The Hollowmen scarecrows.

Thanks, Bean, for being my muse this year... and for all the Halloweenish things you did to help the haunt be what it was. I get creeped out thinking what it would have been like without you.

Many MANY more coming this week.

"We are the hollow men
We are the stuffed men
Leaning together
Headpiece filled with straw. Alas!
Our dried voices, when
We whisper together
Are quiet and meaningless
As wind in dry grass"

Yep.
T.S. Eliot's poem was the icing on the cake for the name of this year's haunt. We were kicking around about five ideas for what we'd call the scarecrows. Initially Hallowmen was the winner since it sounded like Halloween. We decided that the men of the Hollow should be called Hollowmen, not even aware that Eliot had written this poem. When we discovered that fact, it was final. The Hollowmen. I love that it worked out that way. I plan to start the 2008 video with a text passage from that poem.

I can't stop looking at the pumpkin-headed Hollowman. The mind starts creating the backstory everytime you look at it.

Beautiful work as always! I agree Johnny Appleseed is one of my favorites, as well as what I assume is Dead Bird. I can't wait to see the rest of the Hallowmen and all of your pictures.
