Space Suits

Turns out that the Space Jockey seen in the film ALIEN was just a space suit. A rotting fossilized space suit. A bones-pushed-out-from-the-inside, growing-out-of-its-chair space suit.

Man, I am NOT ok with this.

I wish I were friends with H.R. Giger. I'd call him up and see how he feels about this. Oh how we'd lament. Maybe over a pint.

We don't KNOW that those are space suits. That's just one writer's interpretation. Those could be statues; especially since the size seems off. I seem to remember the space jockey on LV-426 being much larger in comparison to the humans.

I think no matter how the "space jockeys" are featured in this movie, space suit or creature it would be disappointing.

Some things are best left to the imagination and can never live up to years of fan collective pondering about.

Man, I hope you're right, but there seems to be one of their helmets being analyzed on a lab table in the trailer.

Hopefully that's a head and not a piece of space gear.

Totally agree, Dave.
I just don't want to know.

I think that's the reason there's a weird Space Jockey sub-culture..none of us want to know. It's been amazing pondering.

I love the analysis of the trailer and pics. My take is that it'll turn out to be some kind of bio-organic suit.

See, I assumed they were scanning a skull, but maybe that's because I've always perceived it as a big fossil, not a suit. The best way to portray it would be to expand a little on that mythology without spelling it out. Deepen the mystery, broaden the scope and fill in some details, without killing it. I've got faith in Ridley Scott for now.

Then again, I was on here trying to be positive about The Thing remake before it released, and we all know how that turned out. :( Maybe I'm too optimistic about this stuff.

off topic: Can I just say how happy I am to have somehow gotten you back into my reader? I spaced and thought you were on a hiatus or something. Stupid technology.

I do my best to find interesting blog material, but recently it's been hard digging neat stuff up...but I'll never give up.

Well, I have not seen any slow down from you Rot in finding interesting material. Still a great blog man.

I have a feeling that the Space Jockey becomes one with his chair through a horrible, treacherous act. In the trailer, a human comes into contact with some kind of goo that starts to morph him and his suit into something rather familiar. Same thing might happen to the Jockey...

Dr. Theda here .... Alien (1979) was a film that greatly influenced the years of my youth...... I hope that Mr. R. Scott ... does well in this "Prequel" ... We will just have to "hope" that it is "good" ... but we will just have live with whatever the Studio gives us.....
