I lived in Japan for a while in the 90s, and no one would ever take any throw-aways. They believed that if you take it, it brings along whatever bad luck the previous owner may have encountered.
We picked up a great free desk a few winters ago and then set it out again about five miles down the road when the cat pee smell hit us all. Sucks that people will let nice furniture get ruined like that, but sucks even worse that we were awful enough to set it out without a warning to the next people to find it.
And people are supposed to plastic-wrap the bedbuggy stuff they set out here but I wouldn't take the chance on picking anything up anymore. You can't get much for free nowadays but you can get all the bedbugs you want in Dayton!
Just picked up a toy water table in perfectly good condition this afternoon (haunted by children perhaps?;) ) and I have a rad chest of drawers(the good solid wood kind with dove-tailed joints )that we rescued a few years back.We completely stripped it and repainted.......aaaaaand I Just went off on a tangent and now I feel like this comment thread is like an episode of some HGTV show.
I think it's on the blog somewhere...but my dad once picked a lamp out of OUR NEIGHBOR'S TRASH! and that neighbor's kid, beings we were friends with this kid because he LIVED NEXT DOOR, saw the lamp and was like "We had one just like it!" and then realized it WAS his old lamp.
