This is a good read. I would love to experience these rides. Glad they touched on Disney's Haunted Mansion, it's my favorite ride ever, and I kept thinking about it as I was reading.
Yeah, I really dug this article. And I hate to admit that I went on the Haunted Mansion ride back in 93 and have almost no memory of it. Very odd because I recall being amazed and I can remember waiting to go in... but I have zero memory of the ride itself.
If you haven't already, check out Laff in the Dark. The website has tones of history about dark rides, and where to find existing ones today!always love a dark ride!used to draw pictures of them in school after riding them at the local carnival!
Ive been on the Knoebels Haunted Mansion. it is fantastic and worth the trip on its oen. If you want to further justify a reason to go, there are two of the best wooden roller coasters in the U.S. and they have another dark ride called the Black Diamond. The food is amazing as well.
I have a deep nostalgic love for dark rides, probably because I grew up with the very same Phantasmagoria featured in that article. They really don't get enough credit for how much they have inspired modern haunts and how good some of those basic tricks are.
Very glad some guy got video of the Phantasmagoria before it was destroyed: https://youtu.be/gnMhiBwrI38

That has to mean something!
That's terrible:(
Obviously you need to go back and ride it again.
totally : )
Maybe you blacked out from all of the Disney awesomeness. ;) Sara would agree.
Sara would say my fanny pack was too tight.
Hahahaha.
Pretty sure the Fanny pack was too tight.
I didn't want my disposable camera to fall out!

Wait,....What?! You wore/wear fanny packs?!
Yes. Me and The Rock loved rocking the fanny pack.
But only in the 90s.
It was a different world back then.
