Enjoying some homemade (and wonderful) pumpkin soup and savoring a porch that's taking shape for the High Holiday. Last night after work, we went to a favorite farm and picked up ten giant bunches of cornstalks. This place is a decent drive from here, but it's totally worth it. Best prices around in an area that pretty much extorts folks when buying pumpkins and corn.
It was dirty work, but some cold pumpkin ale, pizza from a favorite local place, and a lot of laughs made wiring the [ant-filled] stalks in place a ton of fun. We worked as the sun was setting and got it all done in record time. Some neighbors yelled over that they couldn't wait to see this year's Haunt.
I yelled back this year's theme and they seemed really excited.

The stalks look great. Sorry they were full of ants - hopefully not fire ants.
Haha just normal ants. I’m used to spiders being in there but ants are a recent development
If you don't want to use insecticide on them, Windex kills them on contact. It's looks cool.
Great advice!
Porch looks amazing!! But, pumpkin soup? I need that recipe!!
This is the weekend where it all really gets rolling...fall weather, pumpkin soup, cornstalks, etc. sounds like the perfect kick off, and the porch looks great!
Lights go on tomorrow night here, and the whole weekend is dedicated to Halloween activities.
I'm so ready. :)
How do you keep your corn stalks from disintegrating or blowing apart in weather? Mine were pretty shabby after a few weeks outside. This year I’m trying out a couple DIY stalks from a recent tutorial by Van Oaks Props, although I’m not totally convinced that they’ll look real enough.
The secret is wiring them to the post in three different places. Bottom, middle, and top. This keeps them from doing whatever they want when it gets windy or when it rains. I use green wire that they would sell at a craft store.
Can’t wait to see photos, RM!
If that wasnt a tease....I dont know of one. Lol
Haha
The porch looks fabulous! I'm enjoying all the shades of green.
