Humbug

I actually can see the purpose behind a poster like this. And I'm a Halloween advocate. I'd rather people display this stuff so I can clearly tell where not to take my kids. Some of the people who don't like trick or treating are downright grouchy about it and take it out on the kids. Plus, trick or treating has been watered down by a wealth of ridiculous practices, over the years. I hope the Humbugs display these so we don't have to put up with talking to them......I guess turning your lights off was too much for some of them....

I agree with LJ that it would be nice to know what houses contain the grouches. The poster should say, "I'm lame and don't like having fun- go to the next house."
The only thing I DO agree with from that article is not wanting to give candy for no effort. If I share a bag of candy with you, at least buy a mask.

Hum. I appreciate the idea. But not the design. If you are going to say that you are not handing out candy for Halloween - I would not use a Halloween friendly image on the poster/flyer. That is sending a mixed message.

Most people out on Halloween night with their ToTs would see that friendly Halloween sign and be drawn to it. You would have to get closer to realize that it is in fact not a Halloween friendly house. Why are you so close? Because the word "Sorry" in orange is a poor choice as that it is too light a color to be visible in dim light from a distance. (that is just one of the many design flaws!)

When you get close enough to read, you and your kids are already on the porch/close to the door and you are leaving, without ringing the door bell, whispering some kind of explanation to your kids, why someone with a cool Halloween sign, is not handing out candy.

That is fine for the person that put it on the door, but sucks for the ToTs. If you are putting up a sign to be helpful, then make a sign that is.

Cheers!

So. Lame.
Everyone knows that if you don't want trick-or-treaters, just leave your lights off.
*But I admit, maybe these poster-users just seem whiney to me because I'm jealous. I live in NYC, where everybody's in apartments and we don't get trick-or-treaters at all. Unfair!

Never really thought much about that. I guess if you have little kids and live in a metropolis, you most likely will drive them to an area with homes? Heck, I'd take them to the huge homes in Ridgewood, NJ if I lived in NY.
Giant candy bars for sure.

Don't you feel kind of sorry for the people posting this year after year. Were they grounded as a kid from being a superhero or a princess???
Were they not allowed to let their imagination run free on one special night...go out at night and bag tons of candy at the same time??
Honestly.
Just turn your lights off and go to bed.

Yeah--I don't have kids, but that must be where they all go.. It sucks not to have trick-or-treaters come to the door.
And I do love NYC, but while I'm lamenting, here's another urban-specific Halloween bummer: no front yards. Thus, no yard decorations! People (like me) still put out carved pumpkins and stuff in their windows, but it's not the same. I miss driving through neighborhoods looking for orange lights and fake tombstones.
