Is this that thing where you take the picture through the viewfinder of another camera? How does that make the image different? I'm not much of a photographer, so these things elude me.
Yep. That's how it's done. It's really just a physical filter method to add some charater to a photo. Usually a vintage camera is used, to add smudges and specs.
The image gets framed with a dark border and some distortion around the edges. And it plays with the camera's ability to focus as well.
