I got too close after disturbing their gourd home. One got me on the hand as I snapped this [blurry] photo. Nice little welt forming now. Feels like concentrated sunburn. I suspect I'll be dead by morning.

Haha. I always run into a nest every summer. Then I get stung around 5 or 6 times, and I'm running around the yard trying to fend them off.
Then I get pissed off, get the can of hornet and wasp killer, go poke at the nest, then start picking them off as they come out. (as I am laughing the sinister laugh.)
Oh, if you die, can I have a few of your props? :D
:( that sucks. I hate wasps(they were right??) bastards. Only type of bee that actually seeks out meat AND will sting just because they want to.
Sorry for the pain, but at least something found it nice enough to call it home. So if you do, uhm, go toward the light. Can we all start calling dibs on your stuff?
ha...i hereby bequeath ...
I was surprised. I've known they moved in a few weeks ago, so I've stayed away. We were weeding tonight and got too close...so they got agitated. Then as I jammed the camera in their horrid faces, I knew I was going to pay the price. Very angry. All of them took flight and attacked the camera and my hand. I should have known better.
I've since forgiven them.
And the welt is gone, but the skin is still very raw. I'll wake up with tiny white egg sacks on my hand.
if you're anything like me- after the running, uncool-like and arms flailing, i look around to see if my neighbors are watching me from there windows.
Then i do the arms up with a "What?" aimed at there house.
Fonzie would be ashamed...
Bad ass!! I mean, them setting up shop in his head, not you getting stung.
Brother in law got it just above the left temple the other day while working, landscaper, he's allergic and had to be rushed to ER because the pen in their medical kit had expired....in '06. Whoops.
dude, that STINKS.
I survived the night.
the area of the bite is sore like a really bad bruise. Can't imagine folks who get multiple stings.
I dig that they're there.
Living in a scarecrow's brains.
Awwww!.. :(
Good thing you're NOT allergic.
your new super name is::Hornet Man : )
heyyyyyy!!!..it's kinda funny (strange) & fitting that they took up nesting in your little gourd sentinel, cause they're SUCH great builders. same with wasps too, they look for wood splinters, cardboard, stuff like that & chew it up in their mouth breaking it down with their saliva & making a
pulp, so they can form their nests. i think that's Amazzzing.
yeah, you have a gaggle of architects taking a break from building. they're summering in your little guys head...<3
a few yrs back...
i found a small abandoned, paper, wasp nest.
i sprayed it with white primer & put it in an an old glass apothecary jar on top of some glass beads & it looks LOVELY!..it's funny how such a small find can mean to much & make me so Happy, every time i look at it. :)
Ohhhh & when you mentioned tiny white egg sacks, i thought of that movie, 'the believers" the one with martin sheen. made me think of the whole voodoo cursed compact (face powder) scene.
the spiders nesting under her skin & then hatching..ahhhhhhh!!!...Scary!!
Ugh. I hate these freaking things. It seems to be the year for bad wasps, too. We had some start building a nest inside a lantern on our balcony and NOOOOOPE. I had Fiance hose it down with poison and chuck it over the railing with a broom.
They must've set up shop again somewhere close because now we see individuals frequently, going at my plants and the hummingbird feeder like they own the damn place. Two got into the house this week and I about died (not allergic just DEATHLY afraid of them.) Yet another reason I can't wait for cold weather...
the weather was Glorious last night.
it was prefect, like sleeping beneath the stars kinda Perfect..wished i had a hammock. : D
agreed.
really nice today too.
looking forward to tonight as well.
digs the cooler weather.
*shudder* I hate, hate, HATE bugs! Kill Them All!
Ugh - it was almost 100 degrees here today.
RED Wasp and hornets...I despise those insects...but not bees. I do fight them and they have a good memory and are territorial. Careful next time Rot they will appear in the masses next year if you do not get rid the of the nest. Glad your sting is better now.
Youch!! Those things are nasty!! I agree with Monica, you should try and take care of that this year or next year could be way worse.
On another note, the Black-eyed Susans look amazing! We have a bunch too, my Hubbys favorite....do you guys have any problems with yours getting that black spot? And if so, any advice?
we absolutely get that awful fungus spotting. We asked around and were told that it's very common these days on Black-eyed susans. Depressing since I love those things and they're very autumnish to me. But most of ours are dark brown due to that disease. I bought some antifungus spray and we were told not to get water on the leaves cause it makes it spread. Which is really hard when watering them....
lame.
I try to look whenever I see a plant and they all seem to have the disease... even ones at nurseries.
I dig the black rocking chairs.
