Grotesques and Gargoyles.
I've always dug the fact that for the most part gargoyles aren't really for people to enjoy. They're really high up (and sometimes barely visible), and when they're in their glory, acting as a gutter and spitting out streams of water, no one is really seeing them in action, beings it's raining.

I have always been into gargoyles. Have some statues of my own.
Would love to have one on each corner of my house. I had three small ones that went on the end of my gutters. Two broke, have one left. :(
Love these. The national cathedral has some interesting one, including a Darth Vader. My favorite is the last image, of the frozen icicle spew...

Love that skeleton! Reminds me of a figurehead on an old wooden ship. And is it weird I think it's a sultry looking pose?

Yeah, love the hooded skeleton. He is kinda sexy!
We are building a grotesque above the door this year....a detail no one will notice. But it has been far too long since I have traveled this path.

love gargoyles--have collected several books on these guys. as you pointed out, what is so bloody fascinating is the fact that no one was really supposed to be able to view them. yet, so very much artistry and thought went into the appearance of each and every one.
