Knight Of The Crows

Cleaning up some scanned images and came across a scarecrow that never was: The Knight Of The Crows.

Inspired by the tree of knights in the film EXCALIBUR.

I would have made some rusted armor out of mache.

Love your sketches. You really, REALLY ought to make this!

I like these. Are there any concept drawings (say, of scarecrows that you did end up creating) that you might post?

I like that you're sharing the "never was" side of things. It's pretty cool to see not just your finished work but your concept art!

I rarely do concept sketches that are that detailed (detailed in that you can actually see a figure in there) Usually it's just a few crude lines for the general shape. I think I was running short on scarecrow ideas that year so I was drawing them out to hopefully get some inspiration. Not sure which year that was. I wanted to add long posts with torn banners and long thin strips of fabric...like a LOT of them.... not sure why, but it just seemed like a Knight would have banners jammed into the ground around him.

I never drew anything for Roots or the Bog Man. I did a rough sketch for the Hollowman though. He was going to be called RUST - a rusted metallic structure of pipes...with one large pipe opening as the mouth with disgusting stain marks running down the front of him. It's funny how he went from fake metal and rust to abstract wood and mache.

The Pumpkinrot scarecrow was actually drawn out and looked really different than the finished product. His arms were shorter and the fabric was much longer. But after I gave him his long thin arms, I didn't want to take away from them with long draping cloth.

You did sorta do this. With the tin man. Nice header by the way.

Love the sketches. Since you haven't done many concept ones, have you done any drawing based on your creations, inspired by them?

Hey Dave : )

I've never drawn anything based on a finished prop or display. I really should. I'd like to draw the Corn Witches.
