Did a little detail work on my Wind Witch for the porch this season. Cheese cloth dipped in flat black acrylic paint and stretched and torn can be arranged to look like old filthy witch hair.
Works great for corpses too.
Still looking for a light black plastic so I can make her cloak. Something light to blow in the wind as she swings from a wire. (She's just a seasonal decoration - she won't be a part of my 2010 plans.)

how do you make your eyes so deep and dark?! looks great anyway. i cant see why cheesecloth died black wouldn't work. I would look more authentic than plastic. But if you do stick with the plastic approach i'm sure you'll do something magical with it. by the way, is that the actual complete hat you will use for her?
I'm designing her to be similar to a plastic wind ghost. And Old School design... something to blow around in the wind. Last year's wind ghost came to life in even light winds. So I'm hoping to achieve the same thing with her. Thin strips of black plastic won't get weighted down in the rain like cheesecloth or fabric would. I need her to be light as possible at all times.
Since she was built around last year's ghost, and it had hollow eyes, I stuffed her head with paper and then worked mache into her sockets with my fingers. They aren't too deep, but I like them deep enough to create shadows in even weak light. Shadows are key.
Yep, that's the hat. I'm using a store-bought witch hat for her. I'm running the wire up through the hat's point.
She looks spooky! I bet Lowes or HD has different weights of black plastic sheeting, or you could buy cheap-o-la black trash bags at maybe the dollar store.
Good idea if the plastic sheeting fails.

I was actually going to recommend the black trash bags, too, as they are much lighter than most of the black plastic sheets sold at Lowe's etc. The only drawback might be the slightly off-black color or subtle texture on some of them. Just check the smoothness first I guess. A little spray paint should fix any color issues. She looks great, man. Outstanding as always.
check your local party store for black plastic tablecloth...super lightweight and surprisingly strong.
Weed barrier fabric would probably be your best bet - flat black color, and very lightweight.

Seeing pictures of this wonderful witch reminded me to finish my own one. Your blog and site does that a lot to me, and many, many others i'm sure.
That is why you need to just write your book. There are so many people waiting for it, so i'm just nudging you in the most polite manner. It's the kind of thing i just NEED.

I would recommend you look into ripstop material (extremely lightweight without that plastic noise). You can find it cheap in bulk. Check your local Military Surplus store or Joanne's.

It might be too light, but the cheap table plastic from Big Lots, Dollar Tree or Oriental Trading might work.
I think places like Joannes or Hancock Fabric have that wing sock fabric - I know I bought some to make my own flag and it was somewhere btwn $4-6 for a yard or half off with a local ad coupon

hey does anyone know if party city has halloween stuff out yet? I looked in micheals they had a pretty cool 2 shelf display but looking for skeletons to work on for my friday the 13th haunt display this year.
