I have to admit, as promising as this movie seemed via the little bit of pre-release material available I was completely underwhelmed upon finally seeing it. This is purely a straight love story played out with "monsters" as a backdrop. I'm not the type that cares about explosions or wire-fu but I was definitely looking at my watch wondering when something - anything - was gonna happen... Local cable has this as a pre-theatrical on-demand HD special for anyone who wants to endure it..
Wow. Totally the opposite reaction we had. I thought it was such an amazing and human film. The love-story drama playing out with such a bizarre backdrop was pulled off brilliantly.
I didn't want to see another Cloverfield and I was grateful it wasn't anything like it, despite having a similar scenario.
I can't say that I disagree that it was very "human" played out with an unusual backdrop - and I certainly wasn't hoping for anything like Cloverfield, but there was a movie-long lithium void of highs and lows here - and if they were removed altogether would the monsters even be missed? Dashes of King Kong or even District 9 would have gone a long way..
