Funny you should say this, we were just watching 'Labyrinth' in english class today - some awesome practical effects in that (and some revolting Bowie-crotch-shots). If anyone chooses to remake 'Labyrinth' I will die. If it has an 'Alice in Wonderland' level of CGI, the whole universe will die.
I agree about Jurassic Park. I think the artists were trying to prove CG was just a great tool back then. The story came first (and from a doc I watched, they actually planned on doing stop frame animation at first for it).
Since then, Hollywood has gotten lazy. They think we don't care about scripts or stories..just visuals.
And the director of THE THING remake has me worried. In the trailer we see that one shot of a man/Thing with his face temporarily getting distorted...like CG reprogramming. Looked awful.
Just remembering that film gives me the creeps. That is a good thing.
CGI is like any tool. If you know how to use it right, it works...over use it and it doesn't. I think Hollywood is still playing with that toy, it will be a while before we settle down into a happy medium - it is starting to happen....but we have a ways to go. IMHO
BTW - Agree with Marrow 100% - they remake Labyrinth and I am off this planet :)
Old school effects are fantastic. You can't beat it with The Thing. The entire scene starting with the Copper Chopper through the Norris head is the best! "You gotta be f******g kidding!" AWESOME!
Not only the best horror movie ever made, but one of the best films of ANY kind ever made. Simply brilliant, and with the most creative monsters--each one is a work of art. Sigh. Can't wait to watch it again (making myself wait till October 1.)
YES! I am SO SICK of CGI! I long for the days of latex and squibs and puppets. Of course CGI has it's place, but because it's almost completely taken over, I am just sick to death of it. p.s. I must be a sicko, because I rather enjoyed those Bowie-crotch shots! hehehe :D

CGI is meant to enhance and work with puppetry and real sfx work... not replace them.
And this is coming from a computer animator ;)
CGI *is* the devil. THANK YOU!
.....but I sorta really like Jurassic Park. I KNOW. I suck.

I'll still try to have faith until I see it.

Don't forget Bram Stokers Dracula that was made in the 90's was NO CGI. Shows you can make great movie without it
