This guy spent most of the winter in the yard covered by snow and ice. After he thawed, I kept him elevated with holes in the bottom for draining. The sun slowly dried him out.

yup...his inner guts dried out and flaked right out of him like weird dried sponge ...so he's just a thin hard layer of spotty pumpkin skin. We'll leave him out all year.

I was *SO* close to having my own dried out Jack. He sat on my deck ALL winter long....... until the wind whipped him off and well, that was that. :(
Yeah, mine always turn mushy in the Florida heat but I got to save a couple of stems I'm placing in two pumpkin props

I just put two 'ghost' squashkins in the compost pile. It's so cool how this happens. Next year I need to try this with a jacko.
I've tried many times for this but they always rot out.
I'm thinking the constant snow and ice helped this guy dry out.
I'm shocked it held up.
Hmm...no snow and ice here but some horrible hot and dry weather. That must work too.
I can't believe he made it--there is definitely something darkly magical going on here!
I have planned to experiment with making mummy jack o lanterns after visiting a friend who has one. I was thinking of using salt to help the process.
