wOw..........
what can i say. Leslie perfectly cut Halloween wide open!!! it was so amazing to read that & see where like EVERYTHING came from. i saw so many different medias of art borrowing from this rich history & folklore. i saw smidgets of movie plots, poems, songs, graphic arts, fictional stories, etc ALL borrowed from the ancient history & folklore of Halloween. How empty would the arts be without history & folklore.

i loved when Leslie mentioned Tolkien understanding "the fires" with... The sight of a sudden" unexplainable fire instinctively strikes us as otherworldly. Tolkien felt it. Lights flicker above the Dead Marshes outside Mordor in The Two Towers. and Gollum warns Frodo and Sam.."Very carefully! Or Hobbits go down to join the Dead ones and light little candles. Follow Smeagol! Don't look at the lights!" that is such a scary passage in the book & it was captured SO perfectly on the big screen. The Dead Marshes are sucha scary sight to behold.

the pumpkin & the xmas tree go hand in hand!!
i bought a copy of that book Pumpkin...the curious history of an American Icon by::Cindy Ott a few yrs back. it's a must own i think.

Cinderella & her magical pumpkin ride, that tickled me so much when i was tiny & still does. & i Love the whole Peter Peter Pumpkin Eater rhyme...always scared me loads!!!!

Peter Peter pumpkin eater,
Had a wife and couldn't keep her!
He put her in a pumpkin shell,
And there he kept her very well!
brrrr...

i'm going to read these articles again. sooooo good. where would we be now without remembering the past.

Rot...did you ever post a pic of your friend Leslie with a dog? she seems familiar to me for some reason.
