The Order Of The Halloween Tree

A photo series tribute to Ray Bradbury's classic tale.

This series comes to an end with Chapter 6:  Ralph Bengstrum

Ralph stood in his Mummy costume, stunned, watching the last shadows go.

“Is that why I’m dressed like a mummy?” He fingered the bandages. He touched his clay-wrinkled ancient face. “Is that what my part of Halloween is all about?”

“All, boy, all,” murmured Moundshroud. “The Egyptians, why, they built to last. Ten thousand years they planned for. Tombs, boys, tombs. Graves.  Mummies. Bones. Death, death. Death was at the very heart, gizzard, light, soul, and body of their life! Tombs and more tombs with secret passages, so none might be found, so grave robbers could not borrow souls and toys and gold. You are a mummy, boy, because that was how they dressed for Eternity.  Spun up in a cocoon of threads, they hoped to come forth like lovely butterflies in some far dear loving world. Know your cocoon, boy. Touch the strange stuffs.”

“Why,” said Ralph the Mummy, blinking at the smoky walls and old hieroglyphics. “Every day was Halloween to them!"

The Candy Skull

You walked up the hill and paid the graveyard attendant a peso and he flung back a steel door and you went down a spiral stone stair into the earth, into the catacombs.  You entered a long dim hall with one hundred twenty-five mummies facing each other, standing against the walls, their mouths open, their beards intact.  Looking as if they had leaped up at your entrance, screaming silently.

You walked along the line of standing dead.  You looked into the bony, tight-skinned faces.

Until you came to the body of Douglas McClure.

Mummy Mouse Update

Way back in 2009, I blogged about a little mummified mouse that was resting above an electrical panel at the end of a hallway where I worked.  You can read the entry here.

At that point in time, the mouse had been there for as long as some old timers in the building could remember.  The mummy mouse had survived multiple refurbishings and repaintings.  And grossed-out spectators.

I no longer work in that building, but a friend of mine who does texted me the below photo a few days ago.  Covered in dust, and looking like he/she is sleeping, the mummy mouse's remains remain.  And hopefully they'll remain as long as that building is standing.

Haunted Eve 2022: Classic Horror Movie Monsters

The Draculas have ever been the heart's blood, the brains, the sword of our people.

The Classic Monsters...  Such a delightfully cool theme for a Haunt.

Update: Mummy Mouse

Time flies...it was 2009 the first time I reported on the Mummy Mouse at my place of work...
I noticed he was still there this week as I passed by the electrical panel where he rests.

The Curse Of The Mummy

Saw this prop on Grandin Road's Halloween Haven.  I wonder if this Peruvian person ever figured they'd be made into a Halloween prop.  This has to somehow result in a curse.  It HAS to.  How can it not?

The real mummy...

The Grandin Road variety (I wonder if this is the first time a Halloween decoration has been made based on a real corpse).  It's actually a very cool product.

Abandoned

A boy exploring an apparently vacant house in Dayton, Ohio Sunday received a nasty shock when he saw what was inside the closet: the hardened, leathery body of a man whom officials say may have died nearly five years earlier.

Halloween Store Of Stores

This would probably be my personal favorite. An annual tradition. When this shop sets up its Halloween display, the season is officially here. Had so much fun floating through this store.
