It's Trash-CG Week, Apparently

Saw the trailer for a movie that actually looks like a lot of scary fun.  BUT, the shark is a CG shark.  And it's incredible how much of a difference that makes, even in the trailer.  Naturally my thoughts turn to JAWS and how so much of that horror was seeing the massive shark prop under the water (and above it).

What can really be said about practical effects that hasn’t already been said? There’s no denying that the horror genre was at its game-changing best when the blood was Karo syrup and the monsters played by men in costumes, and there’s also no denying that something was lost when makeup effects artisans were mostly replaced by computers.

Seriously. Watch Carpenter’s The Thing and The Thing (2011) side-by-side. You’ll cry.

I kinda blame practical effects for my interest in Yard Haunting.  I feel like movies in my youth were inspirational things where you spent so much time wondering how something was made, and then wanting to make something similar.  My brother made Slimer from Ghostbusters.  We'd make eyeballs and fake blood and dummies to scare our mom.  We made super 8mm movies with burning spaceships and stop-frame animated dinosaurs.  It was time-consuming stuff, and it always seemed to be during the brutally hot days of Summer vacation.  It was great.

Do kids today get inspired watching CG creatures?  I have no idea.  I recall that feeling of knowing something was tangible and that someone was inside, below, or out-of-frame controlling it, making it live.  There were like six guys who made Jabba the Hutt come to life...four of them were stuffed inside.  Crazy.

We watched this last night and fell in love with it.  I read a lot of cruel reviews, so it doesn't make much sense why it has such a bad reputation in the horror community.  I think folks saw the trailer and wanted monsters and action, but they got a character-driven film instead.

To me, it felt like a modern telling of a 70's Hammer monster film.  Loads of style and atmosphere with great characters and acting, with a touch of monsters.  And I'm totally cool with that.  Cause it worked.

Rented this last night from Amazon and it was pretty awesome.  Like watching a group therapy session...  lots of ego and insecurity, and interesting and fun memories from the folks who helped make Star Wars such a neat experience.

Hazard Pay

This morning at work, a coworker stopped over looking as though he had seen a ghost.  He said he had felt something on his leg and it felt like static cling or something.  He pulled up his pant leg and there was a giant cockroach trying to climb up his leg.  He shook it out and it ran away under his desk.
I stopped over and we hunted it.  I have to admit I doubted the estimated size of the beast that he described. 

Well, we found it.  And I think it was bigger than his estimate.

What Could Possibly Go Wrong?

A biotech company in the U.S. has been granted ethical permission by an Institutional Review Board in the U.S. and India to use 20 brain-dead patients for what is sure to be a highly controversial study: From next year, they plan to stimulate their nervous systems in order to restart the brains. Bioquark is hoping that its part in the groundbreaking ReAnima project will reveal if people can at least partly be brought back from the dead.
