The Pumpkin Patch

Wonderful farm that has a pumpkin festival every weekend during October.  We got some terrific pumpkin soup and picked up a few beauties for this year's display.

The Autumn People

First of all, it was October, a rare month of boys; full of cold winds, long nights, dark promises. Days get short. The shadows lengthen. The wind warms in such a way, you want to run forever through the fields, because up ahead, ten thousand pumpkins lie waiting to be cut.

Milky Way Farm Fall Harvest

We took a trip to Chester Springs, PA to visit Milky Way Farm for their annual Fall Harvest.  130 beautiful acres that felt like entering a Bradbury short story and a Wyeth painting.  The weather was chilly and breezy, and absolutely perfect for meandering the hilly farm with hot cider and pumpkin ice cream for pumpkin picking and a corn maze.  Easily the best pumpkin patch around these parts so this will definitely be an annual tradition for sure.  

Close by was a favorite pizza joint so we headed over there for dinner and then watched CANDYMAN (1992) at a special screening at the Colonial Theatre in Phoenixville.  A perfect end to a really wonderful day.

Garden Crow

This guy held up really well throughout the winter.  I kept him in the backyard.  Though he fell over at some point and his old gourd head got all crumbly.  So he has a new (and smaller) head this year.

The pumpkin crop is looking nice and healthy (lower right of the photo).

Hopefully the cooler weather we're having will give these vines a chance to grow some fruit.

2010 Pumpkin Crop

The garden pumpkin patch is starting to wither in spots, and little critters are taking tiny bites out of the green/orange beauties. So I harvested four tonight. Carved the smallest of them - a five-inch tall pumpkin who literally fell off the vine (stem remaining behind).

Surprise In The Garden

Frustrated that all of the pumpkins up until this point would turn yellow, shrivel up, and drop to the ground. A horrible wrinkled death. The pumpkinless vines had taken over the yard, and I started thinking well, at least I'll have the vines. But today - a six inch pumpkin obscured by some taller grass. It was like finding a golden egg. Some other little guys seem promising too. The two on the right have white blossoms - some form of brown gourd.
