Suburban Horror Show

Man, this photo really captures the oddity that is home haunting...  A small dark wonderful world surrounded by a big world of boring life stuff.

Wednesday's Whopper

(On a Tuesday.)

We tried the new Halloween Whopper from Burger King.  Essentially the same as a standard Whopper but with a gloriously purple bun with black sesame seeds, and a slice of Swiss cheese, rather than the standard American.  The power of suggestion made it taste really superb.  Eating it in a cemetery near the Burger King sealed the deal.

Bravo, Burger King.  Long may you reign.

Give Me Something Good To Eat

We found these at Michael’s today.  Huge fan of Mike and Ike’s, so it was great to see a seasonal sour version in the colors of Halloween.

Fire And Brimstone

“If I can but reach that bridge,” thought Ichabod, “I am safe.” Just then he heard the black steed panting and blowing close behind him; he even fancied that he felt his hot breath. Another convulsive kick in the ribs, and old Gunpowder sprang upon the bridge; he thundered over the resounding planks; he gained the opposite side; and now Ichabod cast a look behind, to see if his pursuer should vanish, according to rule, in a flash of fire and brimstone.

Signs Of The Builders In Salem

We were driving around at night in Salem heading to a really neat speakeasy called Deacon Giles and decided to take the long way.  There were so many houses decorated for Halloween and we were pulling over to observe and savor them.  It was a chilly night with a light rain on the way, so we wanted to get as much in as possible before settling in for some cocktails.

Up ahead we saw a beautiful orange glow coming from the most perfect house.  Outlined in orange bulbs with jackos peering from every window, we parked and walked over to really enjoy the atmosphere of this inviting home.  Off to the left side of the house we noticed some dark purple lighting and corn stalks.  It was a patch of homemade scarecrows, growing in the dark crop of stalks.  There was an animated scarecrow prop speaking words of doom.  It was really spectacular.  Overloaded with detail and truly spooky.

I was studying a large scarecrow in the back row when I noticed something familiar with his wooden arms and twined-up joints.  This was the work of some creatures known as The Builders.  It had to be.  One scarecrow even had a red sepulcher carved out of its abdomen, but in this one a glowing red heart and not a candle.  Over there was a droopy pumpkin-headed scarecrow...  and over there was a headless one.

Embellishment aside, it was absolutely wonderful to see someone's yard inspired by my 2022 Haunt.  It all looked incredible and had its own voice.  We didn't want to leave.  We walked back and forth, triggering the talking scarecrow way too many times.  We studied every detail of this beautiful Halloween home.

As an aside, we drove to a local CVS to get some paper so we could leave a note letting them know how much we loved their display.  Hopefully it didn't blow away in the rain.

Here are some photos and a really neat video.

Witch Of The Woods

I have gone out, a possessed witch,
haunting the black air, braver at night;
dreaming evil, I have done my hitch
over the plain houses, light by light.

Three

Eye of newt and toe of frog,
Wool of bat and tongue of dog,
Adder’s fork and blind-worm’s sting,
Lizard’s leg and owlet’s wing.

Magic House

We should have known when we tasted the eaves,
Breaking them off like toffee
And cramming them into our mouths.
And the dear little windows, the color of coffee,
And chocolate doorknobs,
And windowpanes striped with mint.
We should have guessed at the chimney smoke,
White marshmallow fluff.
Taken the hint
From the marzipan bricks
And the fenceposts made of bone rubble.
But it was only when we saw the witch
That we knew we were in deep, deep trouble.

The Kraken House

It seemed to be a sort of monster, or symbol representing a monster, of a form which only a diseased fancy could conceive. If I say that my somewhat extravagant imagination yielded simultaneous pictures of an octopus, a dragon, and a human caricature, I shall not be unfaithful to the spirit of the thing. A pulpy, tentacled head surmounted a grotesque and scaly body with rudimentary wings; but it was the general outline of the whole which made it most shockingly frightful.
