Ghouls And Grinds
We hit up this spooky themed coffee shop last weekend during a road trip. If I lived nearby, I'd be in there every morning. We got their pumpkin pie latte and it was absolutely perfect. Not too sweet, but loaded with a rich pumpkin pie spice flavor that was very different than the pumpkin spice that pops up every autumn in the usual shops. I think I might have re-branded the drink as The Sleepy Hollow. It was THAT good.

Wellness Check
The glow was from the TV which was on a blue screen and is bright enough I didn't need my flashlight to see in. I looked first at the floor to make sure she had not fallen there, couch, recliner, everything was empty. The telephone home base was blinking red with the missed calls and voicemails. From the living room was a hallway that was dark and I couldn't see down. Using my flashlight I could only see an open door down the hall. Still no signs of life.
I turned around and told the complainant that everything looked ok and nothing was disturbed. I turned back around and an elderly woman is looking back at me with her face right up next to the glass. I couldn't breathe; it felt as if I had been hit in the chest by a bat. I fell backward and off of the bucket. I hit the ground hard and the complainant rushed to me. I pushed her off as she was trying to help me up and I ran back up on the bucket. My heart was pounding but I had to see. Instinct had my hand on my gun the other was up on the window. I looked back inside and saw a frail elderly woman standing in the hallway wearing a long nightgown with her back to me. She turned her head to the side and looked at me out of the corner of her eye and slowly walked out of view and down the dark hallway.

Infrared Evidence
I've posted this in the past, but it's a pretty spooky piece of evidence. My brother and I often say to each other "God, I wish this stuff would happen to you, at your house, late tonight. It's the only way I'd truly believe in ghosts." Swap out 'ghosts' with 'aliens' and you get the picture. "I hope they abduct you tonight. It's the only way to know for sure."

Nightlight
The camera had moved again.
She sighed as she stared into her phone. She was tired. SO tired. Everyone is quick to tell you the horrible birth stories, and the magic of unconditional love. No one talks about the everyday fatigue, constant demands, unending attention. She felt that was the hardest part. The camera was a blessing at first - she could see her daughter from any room in the house, anywhere on the property, actually. She felt like she was finally getting her life back when the baby slept. But now, as it had done every day for the past week, the camera had drifted from her sleeping daughter and over to the small lamp in the corner they used as a nightlight.
She had reset her password. She had her husband check the wall mount. But still, every afternoon during nap time, the camera would drift off into the corner. She never saw it moving. One moment it was on her daughter, the next, on the lamp. "Fuck it," she thought. A storm was moving in, and the overcast sky was begging for a nap. "I can still hear her," she mused, pulling the covers around her.
She woke to thunder shaking the house, and something else. She listened for a cry, a wail, but heard nothing. As hard as she tried, she couldn't fall back asleep. Checking her phone, she noticed her daughter's room was dark. Very dark. Save for the flickering lamp in the corner. And then, movement. She could just make out the shape of her daughter crawling on the floor, towards the lamp. She had never done that before, never gotten out of her crib, and as she ran down the hallway staring down at her phone, a man's voice stopped her cold.
"What a pretty girl! You are so pretty....I'd hang you like a lantern!"
The lamp flickered out.

Hallmark's Howl-O-Ween Sounds (1987)
Remember card stores? I mean, I know they're still out there, but they seemed to be everywhere back in the 80s. One in every strip mall. These places were gold mines for Halloween decorations and an assortment of spooky sound effects tapes. I remember buying a roll of orange Halloween crepe paper once just because I thought it was neat. Never opened it. Those shops were probably the prelude to how so many of us Halloween folk love to go Halloween shopping in all the big stores come the season. As I can recall having that same feeling of looking around and then spotting the bright orange colors of paper decorations and darting off in that direction.

Peep
What he saw was a hotel bedroom, like his, and in the corner was a woman whose skin was incredibly pale. She was leaning her head against the wall, facing away from the door. He stared in confusion for a while, was this a celebrity? The owners daughter? He almost knocked on the door, out of curiosity, but decided not to. As he was still looking, the woman turned sharply and he jumped back from the door, hoping she would not suspect he had been spying on her. He crept away from the door and walked back to his room. The next day, he returned to the door and looked through the wide keyhole. This time, all he saw was redness. He couldn’t make anything out besides a distinct red color, unmoving. Perhaps the inhabitants of the room knew he was spying the night before, and had blocked the keyhole with something red. He felt embarrassed that he had made the woman so uncomfortable, and hoped she had not made a complaint with the woman on the front desk.
At this point he decided to consult her for more information. After some gentle quizzing and the promise that the explanation would go no further than him she finally said “Well, I might as well tell you the story of what happened in that room. A long time ago, a man murdered his wife in there, we find that even now, people get uncomfortable staying there. But these people were not ordinary. They were white all over, except for their eyes, which were red.”

The Ceiling Man
I couldn’t sleep the first night.
I was in bed and as soon as I turned onto my back, I saw him in a box of light, standing.
He looked trapped and his hands were banging against the box, he wanted out. At six years old, I couldn’t do anything but clutch my teddy bear and cry.
The next night I checked the entire room to make sure it wasn’t my brothers trying to prank me. There was no sign of them, but the man on the ceiling was still there. He wasn’t banging against the wall that time. He didn’t do anything, actually. He just stood there.
It continued, night after night. Sometimes he walked back and fourth in the box of light, sometimes he would beat against the box, and sometimes he would stand there, watching.
The last night I saw him, after weeks of enduring it, I heard laughter. It was unbelievably unnerving and I threw my teddy bear off to the side and whispered, “Go away.”
Thankfully, he did.
For years I passed it off as a dream, a reoccurring one, at least until I brought it up with my mom last year. She said that she had checked up on me one night when I was six years old and saw a man on the ceiling, in a box of light.
I try not to look at the ceiling when I go to sleep.
