Antonio Bay Weekend

Remember those windy daytime shots from John Carpenter's THE FOG?  

The vastness of the sea was captured really well in that film.  And the windy beach and lighthouse scenes captured a sense of isolation that helped set up the slow build to the coming night mists of the fog (and Blake and his men).  

We took a trip to the southernmost tip of New Jersey this weekend.  Cape May isn't like the other shore points in Jersey.  Quaint Victorian homes and only a modest stretch of hotels make the town feel cozy and inviting.  The weather was sunny, chilly, and very windy.  We joked about capturing Cape May's darker side for an Antonio Bay photo dump, but in the photos below, we ended up catching a really nice weekend at the Jersey shore.

Cobweb Library Lamp

Among the many exquisite Tiffany lamps in the Morse collection, the Cobweb library lamp is likely the most rare. Fewer than ten examples are known to exist today. The lamp incorporates an extremely complex leaded-glass shade on an elaborate mosaic base, making it much more difficult to produce than the typical Tiffany lamp. At $500 in 1906, it also sold for nearly four times the average lamp. The shade is composed of flowers and eight spider web medallions, each of differing configuration and glass. Supported by bronze branches, it forms a canopy over the lamp’s mosaic base, a vessel for holding fuel oil that is covered with clusters of white narcissus in full bloom. Spiders and other insects were popular subject matter for nineteenth-century artists such as Louis Comfort Tiffany (1848–1933) who were inspired by Japanese art.

The Weeping Glass

Never visited this neat shop, but it appears to be the store featured in the old Friday the 13th tv series from the 80's...  The Weeping Glass is a true Oddities & Curiosities Shoppe.

I always wanted to work in this store...

They are in the process of moving to a new location, so I wanted to feature them as I brew some of their fine hot elixirs on this weird windy snowy day.

The Mummy

Weekend viewing of this old one from 1932.  Shamefully, never saw it before and was amazed that the scene below was the only appearance of Boris Karloff as the "traditional" mummy.  I don't think this fact would have pleased me very much as a ten-year-old kid watching a horror film called "The Mummy," but it really worked for this movie.
