The Awakening

The Cross

Growing up in my parents' house, my brother and I shared a room. We had an old wooden cross on the bedroom wall. It looked more like something that Peter Vincent would have in his home, and I'm pretty sure that's the look we were going for back in those days, since we also had skulls and devil masks, and weird lamps in there as well.

One night, late, I was trying to fall asleep and noticed my brother was stirring. He sat up and looked like he was still sleeping. He turned to the wall and looked up at the cross. Then he reached up and removed it, and then reached down and sat it on the floor and went back to sleep.

I should have yelled "DUUUUDE!?!?!?!!?" but I was kinda frozen with fear. And probably remained that way until the sun came up.

The Hag

The Hag is astride,
This night for to ride;
The Devill and shee together:
Through thick, and through thin,
Now out, and then in,
Though ne’r so foule be the weather.

A Thorn or a Burr
She takes for a Spurre:
With a lash of a Bramble she rides now,
Through Brakes and through Bryars,
O’re Ditches, and Mires,
She followes the Spirit that guides now.

No Beast, for his food,
Dares now range the wood;
But husht in his laire he lies lurking:
While mischiefs, by these,
On Land and on Seas,
At noone of Night are working,

The storme will arise,
And trouble the skies;
This night, and more for the wonder,
The ghost from the Tomb
Affrighted shall come,
Cal’d out by the clap of the Thunder.

Christmas Weekend

These are the times that try men's souls: The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of his country; but he that stands by it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman.

-Thomas Paine, from The American Crisis

Some photos from the Washington crossing the Delaware re-enactment on Christmas day.

And some snow shots from the current storm we're getting.

Never Alone

The book Haunted Houses by photographer and author Corinne May Botz lay inside. The image on the cover is below. Her photography is amazing and the pages contain accounts by the inhabitants of haunted homes. Subtle and chilling, like ghost stories for darkened rooms or dying fires. I was thrilled to find the author's site, which includes the actual recordings of some of the tales found within the book. Click here to listen to them (the last one is my personal favorite). And click here to see some of the photos contained in the book. And click HERE to order Haunted Houses.

Happy Christmas To All

We'll be hanging with George Washington tomorrow. Going to attend the annual re-enactment of the historic Christmas crossing of the Delaware River by General Washington. Never did it before, so I'm thinking it'll be a blast.

If I had a little more courage, I'd sneak to the Jersey side and dress as a Redcoat filling my canteen at the shore. I'd look up and yell "WHAT THUUUUUU...!!!!!!???" and run up the muddy bank, and bang my head on a rock.

Merry Christmas!

Stingy Jack

Great costume concept featuring a very classic and historically accurate turnip design.
Not crazy about the happy pumpkin in the shot.
