The Zombie Business

We watched another great documentary on Netflix Streaming - Nightmare Factory.  This is more about the evolution of the makeup effects industry than about the methods of the men who work in it.  Really great stuff.

Face Off

I'm very late to this party and I blame other "reality" shows for tainting my perception.  And I blame SyFy's other effects show Monster Man for chasing me off completely.

We caught a Face Off marathon a while back and I was really surprised to find a show that was nothing about back-stabbing and horrible human values.  It's just a bunch of talented makeup artists working on a weekly design challenge which gets presented to a panel of judges.  No forced drama.  No fake scripting.  And a lot of neat makeup effects.

The artists even help each other out along the way, lending a creative hand where they can, so it's kinda sad when someone loses the weekly challenge.  Though it always seems to be a legitimate, talent-based elimination.

Hemocyte

He lay there on the bed and took deep breaths of the darkness, hoping for sleep. But the silence didn’t really help. He could still see them out there, the white-faced men prowling around his house, looking ceaselessly for a way to get in at him. Some of them, probably, crouching on their haunches like dogs, eyes glittering at the house, teeth slowly grating together, back and forth, back and forth.
And the women ...
Did he have to start thinking about them again? He tossed over on his stomach with a curse and pressed his face into the hot pillow. He lay there, breathing heavily, body writhing slightly on the sheet. Let the morning come. His mind spoke the words it spoke every night, Dear God, let the morning come.

The Walking Dead Blog

I'll be checking in on this blog regularly.
Pretty excited about this new series.

Incredible. I've watched A LOT of zombie films over the years, and this is the first time I'm seeing a zombie and not just an actor in makeup. It's truly terrifying. And believable.

Stan Winston (1946-2008)

A little shocked with the news that Stan Winston passed away this weekend. My teenage years were spent admiring this guy's makeup/creature effects/special effects/design work on the likes of TERMINATOR, PREDATOR, ALIENS, and the fantastic PUMPKINHEAD (which he directed as well).

Wikipedia lists some notable films of his:
Heartbeeps (1981)
The Thing (1982)
Friday the 13th Part III (1983)
The Terminator (1984)
Aliens (1986)
The Monster Squad (1987)
Predator (1987)
Leviathan (1988)
Pumpkinhead (1989)
Edward Scissorhands (1990)
Predator 2 (1990)
Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991)
Batman Returns (1992)
Jurassic Park (1993)
Interview with the Vampire (1994)
Congo (1995)
The Island of Doctor Moreau (1996)
T2 3-D: Battle Across Time (1996)
Ghosts (1997)
The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997)
Small Soldiers (1998)
Lake Placid (1999)
End of Days (1999)
Pearl Harbor (2001)
A.I. (2001)
Jurassic Park III (2001)
Darkness Falls (2002)
Big Fish (2003)
Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003)
Wrong Turn (2003)
Constantine (2005)
Iron Man (2008)

Such an impressive list of creatures and effects. I remember telling people that I wanted to be this guy. I used his name as if people should know who the heck I was talking about, "Stan Winston! - he designed the Alien Queen in ALIENS!"

Rest in peace, man. Neatest guy around.
