Halloween Candles

It's a really good year for unique Halloween scents.  Been seeing a lot of fun designs and cool names on candles in stores like Home Goods...  Haunted House, Fright Night, Midnight Haunt, Dark Amber Potion, Witching Hour, Spooky Season, and even something called Rotten Pumpkin (smells sweet and pleasant, unfortunately).

Naturally, prices shot up for candles like they did for everything else, so I've only been window (nose) shopping.  Still hoping for some super dark and smoky scent.  Preferably something with a hint of black licorice, and earthy dirt notes.  You know, something no one would buy, and I'd find it on a clearance rack for two bucks.

Jumbo Incense Sticks

Been droning on and on for years about the importance of scent on Halloween night.  I picked up these amazing oversized incense sticks from my favorite incense shop - The Plant Guru.  At 19 inches, they last an extremely long time, and the scent is pretty intense.  I ordered the Clove varietal, of course.

Lunar Light Company

These are some high-end super-scented candles.  

I've ordered a few of them and the scent descriptions are spot-on (usually scent descriptions embellish and flat-out lie [I'm bitter]).  

Here are some from their site:

This fragrance starts with spicy black pepper and strong notes of teakwood and cardamom for a sharp edge. Earthy wet moss, vetiver and hints of citrus fruits give it a natural base. Dark, alluring, and strangely romantic!

For anyone who digs on the incense, The Plant Guru is a great company with reasonable prices, free and fast shipping, and fantastic products.  I had clove and pumpkin spice incense sticks burning on Halloween night during trick-or-treating hours and it really loaded on the atmosphere.

Naturally I overbought, so now I burn ten at a time on the porch with the windows open.  Someone's going to call the fire department (one neighbor confessed she thought I smoked weed and I was burning incense so much to hide the scent).  This uptight guy was offended.

Dusk

So, as a guy who hates going to malls, I made a trip to a local mall where I knew they had a Yankee Candle Store.  Mind you, I'm not proud of this fact...  that I visited a mall for the sole reason of smelling a candle called Autumn Dusk.
I get in there and start sniffing around, and I can't find it.  I see their other new Autumn scents, and they're all soapy and perfumey.  But Autumn Dusk is nowhere.  So now I'm going to be forced to ask the store employee "Do  you have that new Fall scent?" [trying to butch it up.]  And she's like "We have a few new scents! Which one were you looking for?!"  And I lie "I think it's called something like Autumn Dusk."  And she says "No, that's not one of the new ones."  And I'm like "...nah...I'm pretty sure it's called Autumn Dusk."  And she SHOULD have been like "I thought you didn't know what it was called!"  but then she remembers, "That's our web exclusive scent!"  And I'm like "Web Exclusive?!  Who buys a candle without smelling it?!" [blowing my cover...and exposing my non-butchiness.]

So there you have it.  Save yourself a trip to the store. 

The Scent Of Halloween

Promoting a favorite Etsy shop again - Soy-N-Suds.
Just ordered some of her Anise & Clove candles.  Pure Halloween.  So many people who visited the porch last year commented on the amazing scent.  Toasted pumpkin lids mixed with the sweet dark scents of anise and clove really added to the atmosphere.  And the two together make something entirely different than the licorice/clove smells you're thinking of.
