Elysburg Haunted House

"I don't mind skulls and bones," said Marie. "There's nothing even vaguely human to them.  I'm not scared of skulls and bones. They're like something insectile.  If a child was raised and didn't know he had a skeleton in him, he wouldn't think anything of bones, would he? That's how it is with me. Everything human has been scraped off these.  There's nothing familiar left to be horrible.  In order for a thing to be horrible it has to suffer a change you can recognize.  This isn't changed. They're still skeletons, like they always were.  The part that changed is gone, and so there's nothing to show for it. Isn't that interesting?"

Transworld's East Coast Haunters Convention 2025 Walkthrough

If you were curious what this event was like, here's a nice, non-sensational walkthrough.  Some really neat props.

Now maybe this stuff exists already, but I always thought a company would make a ton of cash selling small motors for people (me) who aren't good at assembling that sort of thing.  Small, quiet (strong) motors that slowly rotate to aid a stirring witch, or maybe one that looks side to side in a somewhat slow, somewhat fast, unpredictable manner, to have a prop's head look in various directions.  As a static prop guy, I would absolutely build a witch with a head that darts left, and then right.

The Dark Ride At Wonderland Pier

Closing its doors permanently in October, Gillian's Wonderland Pier has been operating by the sea since 1929.  When we heard about this, we made an impromptu trip to Ocean City, NJ to make sure we filmed their Dark Ride.

Not sure if anyone will swoop in at the last minute to save this historic destination, but just in case they don't, click below to enjoy a ride...

Memories Of Halloweens Past

The next submission for this fun blog series (click here to see the others) comes from the super talented home haunter Fraidy.  This one is terrific, and it's not tied to a particular Halloween possession, but rather a haunted attraction - The Indianapolis Children's Museum Haunted House.  Started in 1964, it's the oldest continually operated spook house in the country.  Fraidy shared that she has many fond memories visiting this attraction and provided some links featuring vintage photos from its early days... Old School Halloween Heaven for sure, "Looking back, it was actually pretty scary! - even for adults - and over the years, it has inspired countless young Halloween fans to make haunted houses of their own."

Click below for a fantastic article about the Haunted House, which includes some amazing would-never-do-that-stuff-now memories from a blogger who grew up near the attraction.  Here's an excerpt:

October 1 was the day we walked into our classrooms at school and found the “Dial-A-Witch” flyer on our desks promoting that year’s version of the haunted house.  While the themes of the haunted house would change annually, there was always a loose association with these witches who were kind of the marketing team for the haunted house.  The “Dial-A-Witch” flyer would not only provide with the hours of operation for the haunted house, but provide you with a 1-800 number to call in order to talk to a witch.  This, for me, was as sacred a Halloween tradition as trick-or-treating!

This submission opens up some possibilities for this blog feature - so if you're sitting there thinking that you don't necessarily have a Halloween item that's been with you for decades, but you have a specific memory that you cherish and that may have started your Halloween obsession, send it on!  I would love to post it on the blog.

Thanks, Fraidy!  This was really great.  I had never heard of this Haunted House before.

Shadow's Edge

A now-defunct haunted attraction in Omaha.  Not many prop photos on their social media, but I thought this one was pretty neat.

Haunted Overload: Nighttime

When the sun sets on Haunted Overload, the transformation is otherworldly.  Gone is the carpet of bright leaves and daytime detail of much of the landscape within those tall, wooden, and pointy walls.  Long cold shadows creep out and spread over the haunted attraction, turning it into a place of massive dark shapes, flickering jack o'lanterns, and high-pitched shrieks.  It's all blanketed by a heavy fog flowing through in slow dense patches, hiding lurking creatures and chainsaws waiting to roar up the path behind you.

Haunted Overload really is one of those bucket list places you hear about.  I can't think of anything else like it.  And to experience it in person, in both daylight and darkness, was an unforgettable part of this Halloween season.  My highest recommendation to put this on your bucket list, and to check it off as soon as possible.

Below are some of the photos we took...
