Hocus Pocus

I'm the world's biggest Bette Midler fan.
Please change "fan" to "hater."
I'm not kidding.  I'm missing the genes that most people have that are required to like anything about her.  And that Wind Beneath My Wings song is probably the worst thing to happen to mankind.  Ever.

I've avoided this movie as a result of my inhuman hatred for Bette Midler and the horrible way she looks in this movie.  Though I have to admit that I've always thought that Sarah Jessica Parker has never looked better.  She makes a sassy Witch.

So I blame Bette Midler for me not knowing that my favorite film composer James Horner had actually written some music for this film, before he left due to project conflicts (or a hatred for Bette Midler) and handed the scoring job over to someone else.

Ah well. You know how the saying goes, "Haters gonna hate." Too bad Rot, you're missing out on something good! I have this movie in my "must watch every halloween" collection. Yessiree, it's right there with the original Halloween and Rosemary's baby. Gotta say, I've never heard anyone say that they didn't like this movie. In fact, the other day I was in my local music/ movie store, they have their Halloween movies out looking to make a buck... Just as I was cashing out, I heard some one who as soon as they got into the store exclaimed, "Hocus Pocus!?" Heehee.. And well, to make things more interesting, a girl I knew waaaay back when was an extra in that movie. She was one of the children being lured from her house., walking down the street. Lucky her! She was front of the line! :D

I tried watching this movie. I hated it.

I think that Midler song was popular when I was in grade school. They literally made us hold hands(for that holding hands across America stint in the 90's) WHILE THEY PLAYED THAT FORSAKEN SONG.

Also, I love Disney but even I have standards, lol.

Not sure if you realize- Bette Midler is a BIG Fan of Halloween and Every Year she host a Party in NYC called "HULAWEEN" ( for her love all things Halloween and Hawaiian) Google it if you want to know more. I must say as far as the film "Hocus Pocus"it is great for 5-9 year olds. WAY to corny for my taste!

With you.
Midler is horrific and not in a good way.

Hocus Pocus is awful. 1986 Worst Witch awful.

On another note, one of my favorite movies is not exactly Halloweeny but it has witches - Practical Magic with Sandra Bullock. I watch it every year.

Rot, so here is the deal. As fare as halloween movies go that just ooze the spirit, this one is up there. And Sarah Jessica Parker looks WAYYYY better in this movie. Its up there with Trick r Treat with the halloween vibe. Well worth putting aside your hate for this one

this movie and the Halloween tree defined my childhood. totally worth a watch, even if it is just to enjoy a time when Halloween specials where...well special. it is cleverly written and choked full of so much 90's goodness it is hard to hate. give it a try rot, whats the worse that could happen?

One of my favorite Halloween movies. It's created such great memories for me.

This movie oozes Halloween spirit in every frame and I am very thankful that it exists.

@girl6 Do you mean THE Griffin Dunne of American Werewolf in London fame? I didn't know that. Huh...

Personally, I love Hocus Pocus. Bette Midler aside yeah, Sarah Jessica Parker never looked better, the kid is the same kid from Eerie, Indiana, Thora Birch is the little sister and Doug mothafreakin Jones (of Hellboy and Pans Labyrinth fame) is the zombie. I think it visually represents a Halloween I always wish I had as a southern California kid, red, orange and brown leaves on the trees in the beginning of the movie always did it for me in my land of palm trees.

For what it's worth, this is, without question, one of my absolute favorite Halloween movies, one that I watch with my family, without fail, every October. In fact, we watched it just a few hours ago. Give it a chance.

I should mention, too, that the score for Hocus Pocus has been a Holy Grail for me for years - I have yet to find it, in any form, and I WANTS IT.

hey In Extremis, Yes the same Griffin Dunne.. :)

I always Appreciated, what a Nice job he did (Especially as a man) directing a modern woman's witch story..i Like his commentary for the movie as well.

Mr. ShellHawk and I own this one, and have seen it so often that if one of us says, "Amuck," the other starts bouncing up and down, singing, "amuck amuck amuck amuck!"

Oh, and the comment "We are DOOOOOMED" comes out when one of us is being overly dramatic about something unworthy of drama...

It's very likely you'll like it, Rot!
