Monster Cereal Memoriam

It's time for a harsh truth - the Monster Cereals are dead.  Or rather (and kinder), they aren't what they used to be.  They haven't been for quite some time (apparently, I've gone on about this before).  I was surprised to see that they first hit the market in 1971, back in the time of edible poison dyes.  I grew up knowing these cereals, especially Boo Berry, which seemed to be the one my mother would bring home most often from the grocery store.  It was dark and dense and extremely flavorful.  Who cared if it had indigestible pigments?  Not me.

Well, they went away, and then came back.  And each Halloween season they reappear with great fanfare.  Yet no one is really commenting on the fact that they are toothless versions of their 70's selves.  The cereal is lighter in color and texture...the flavor is weak and a bit unusual.  Essentially, it's not what I remember.  And being an adult ten-year-old boy, well, that matters (probably just to me).

So, in the year 2024, General Mills released a new Lucky Charms cereal called Berry Swirl Lucky Charms.  General Mills is the same company responsible for the Monster Cereals.  Not realizing this fact and being blinded by the most colors I've ever seen on a box of cereal, I bought them.  Gleefully.

Now get this - they're so reminiscent of the texture and flavor of those old fruity Monster Cereals that I almost checked the box to make sure it didn't say Frute Brute.  If you're into toxic-bright cereals and you occasionally find yourself missing the Monster Cereals, these might be for you.

Who knows... maybe it's the Dawn of the Renaissance of Cereal... I'm guessing it's not.  So, in the meantime I'll make sure I buy another box of this stuff.

I'm not proud of this photo.

Yeah glad you said what had to be said. It doesn’t just go for this cereal, it goes for all cereals. My theory is that they have replaced high fructose corn syrup and white flour is gone. Replaced by either fake sugars or real cane syrup/sugar. Also, whole wheat replaces the white? Is flour even in cereal? Anyway, as good a theory as any I suppose. I’ll check these out.

A solid theory!!!

I agree, the Monster Cereals do not taste the same, or even good, to me. Very artificial and almost a stale taste, even when fresh. After last Halloween, I decided I would stop buying them at all. But I will try these Lucky Charms to see.
