Reminds me of a little worn paperback from the 60s my grandmother gave me when I was a kid. It was called "Spook", and it was about a little black dog who was forced to be the familiar of a cruel witch with a cat allergy.
It had a lot of wonderful little Halloween illustrations, all hand-drawn by the author, I think. For a couple years, I read that book (well, asked to have it read to me) year-round.

Man, this is the kind of artwork that added so much to Halloween when we were kids. And it was always so rare.
