Spirit Board

This isn’t really anything scary. It’s just something that kind of shocked me when it happened. A few months ago, I decided to ask my friends if anyone wanted to do a Ouija board session with me. They were hesitant at first, and some of them outright refused, but a few of them agreed. The first few sessions we did were pretty tame. We got answers, but nothing really got weird. One night, we’re sitting in my dorm room on our college campus playing with the Ouija board. People say that Ouija boards are really just your subconcious giving you answers or that someone in the group is just moving the planchette. I decided to test this, so I asked a question in my head. I didn’t vocalize the question at all or give any indication of what I was asking. After I asked the question in my mind, the planchette moved and spelled out, “time stops.” I immediately took my hand off the planchette and kind of just sat there, a bit shocked because that hadn’t been the answer I was expecting to my question. I was expecting something like “hot” or “cold”. My friends stared at me in confusion and wanted to know what my question was. I had asked, “What’s it like in hell?”

we were recently talking about digging out the old ouija board back at my folks' house.

I hate admitting it, but I have serious reservations about using it.

Perfectly chilling.

I have similar reservations after having watched my mom experience some crazy things while using one when I was a kid, but, for the life of me, can't seem to evict the attraction to the design of that board from my psyche. The font, the woodcut images. Beautiful and unsettling, even thirty years later. Picked up a tin of mints recently emblazoned with the image of the board on it's lid. That smiling sun is watching me right now, as I type.

A very dear friend of mine who died four years ago this month was a medium who specialized in cases that most other "professionals" would not, could not touch. Negative hauntings and non-human entities. He always advised against ouija boards (and other forms of amateur channeling like pendulums) because they are very prone to contacting only the lowest levels of the spirit world. It's true that not all spirit communication is bad, but connecting is like taking an elevator ... and you have to learn the proper way to go UP ... or else the board will just leave you in the basement with all sorts of unsavory characters. If you want to communicate with spirits, learn how to protect yourself and learn proper ways to meditate. Casual playing with these "toys" can lead to big trouble. Not every time, of course. And not always right away (sometimes they'll wait to act on the invitation until you and your life are at a more vulnerable point ... that's right ... dabbling 10 years ago can come to haunt you today). Just as you wouldn't wander into a strange neighborhood and invite anyone and everyone who crosses your path to come play with you, nor would you leave your front door unlocked while you sleep at night, you shouldn't do that with a ouija board, either. If you do use a board or the like, never, ever believe anyone who answers you about who they are. Question everything. Bad spirits will lie and tell you they are good, but in the end they always reveal themselves.

I'm a skeptic regarding most everything supernatural, but these things legitimately creep me out. Always have. I wouldn't mess with them.

I just couldn't get into the ouija board. To this day I don't believe in it. i, also like Mr. Glasset, am a skeptic about the supernatural. I need something to just appear in front of me and say "BOO DAMMIT! NOW DO YOU BELIEVE?"

Then again, I do have that photo we took at the Jenni Wade house in Gettysburg that I know for a fact that she was not standing there when the picture was taken....

Goosebumps! I got em. That was a good one.
(And we have an antique wooden Ouija board in our closet. I hope I can sleep tonight...)
