Attics Are Awful And Lovely

It sounded almost like... A creaking sound. I suspected it was the garage mechanisms on the ceiling. Although they were not in any use, it couldn't have been them. But my eyes quickly caught onto the styrofoam square covering the cutout in the ceiling that led to the attic. I saw it partially open, and slowly closing. I almost died. I couldn't breathe. I ran out of that room SO fast, and QUICKLY closed, and locked, the door. I quickly grabbed my Mom's arm and whispered: We need to get out of the house, NOW!

Did I ever tell you about my other sister?

Something In The Attic

Mr. Brown, 73, was helping his son clean out the attic and had just finished climbing the ladder when he realized something was watching him.  His initial thought was it was just a rat but when he got a clear line of sight to the creature, he realized it was a tall, dark figure.  Startled, he swung the flashlight he was holding in the direction of the invader and heard a sound similar to chattering teeth. However, Mr. Brown reported the creature backed away from the light with what sounded like human footsteps.

When Mr. Brown’s son, a 42-year-old landscaper, joined him in the attic, he initially thought his dad was joking with him until he realized that the shadow he saw in the corner of the room was not a coat or a sheet or anything else man-made.

Paranormal Witness is back. And I'm pretty excited about that.

Torment

Then it started using my mother's voice, and I hated it for that.

Attics

The attic in this house came with a big lock on the attic door which is located in the ceiling of the main bedroom. Last night I removed the hardware so I could sand, fill the holes, and repaint. It was an old nasty thing.

And I'm sure that's where my ghost story begins.

Mache And Mice

When we first started making props, my brother and I would use strips of newspaper dipped into a mache mixture of just flour and water. We'd store those props in my parents' attic and a lot of the early ones are still up there. The tombstones I have used in past haunts were also coated in the flour mache. As well as the Pumpkin King on the porch and the earliest prop we ever made - the weird little ghost prop from Tales from the Darkside's "Trick Or Treat" pilot.

Two weeks ago, my father called and wanted me to come down and check the roof from inside the attic because he suspected a leak. All those old props had been skinned alive - by mice. They ate the flour right off of the newspaper. The tombstones were in pieces and the props looked like they died from extreme psoriasis. Thankfully they don't eat Elmers glue.

My dad asked me to pick up rat/mouse poison next time I'm shopping for supplies at a Home Depot or Lowes. I lied and said I would.

There's just no way.

Attics, Witches, And Pumpkin Sentinels

Visited the folks' house this weekend to slither into the attic and start collecting some supplies for the 2009 display. Brought home a bunch of stuff to get started on. After all these years, I realize that I associate a large part of Halloween with the dusty smell of an attic. Back in the days of my youth when I still lived at home, I can remember times my brother and I talked about putting some sleeping bags up there and spending the night in the cramped space of the attic. Not sure if our parents shot down the idea or if we just chickened out, but we never did it. The insulation fibers in my lungs probably would have been a neat sensation come morning. Or the nails poking through from the roofing would have done a number on my skull in the event I woke up and forgot where I was and sprung up too fast. And then there's the creepy darkness. That's probably what did it for us. Why we didn't camp out up there. Not even once.

A line from Ray Bradbury's poem In-Between goes: "Attics are awful and lovely." And I agree.

Going to be working these coming weeks like a fiend on the Corn Witch display. The Witches will get a make-over. Other props will be created, so there will be a lot of additions and surprises. Two creatures I'm going to get started on will be The Pumpkin Sentinels. They're going to be at the base of the walk to greet anyone that's brave enough to make the long walk to the porch for candy. And it's going to be a VERY long walk this year. I promise.

In the Attic...

"Attics are awful and lovely.
You know what I mean?
Basements are low, dank, and darksome,
Halloween's buried there..."
