Gangster: Revisited

Back in 2012, I wrote about a costume I wore for Halloween and a wardrobe malfunction that ensued.  You can read the post HERE.

Found a bunch of old photos the other night and one of them was a shot of us before we headed off on that fateful night.  I'm the tough guy on the right (my costumes were always last-minute)...

Now Playing: Childhood Dream

By Wojciech Golczewski.  Love this track.

Click the kids below (I think I'm on the right)...

Froderick Krueger

That time I didn't dress as a Pumpkin Head nor as Michael Audrey Myers.  Keep in mind this was before you could buy a Freddy glove or a rubber Krueger mask, as the film had just come out.  The makeup was knox gelatin and scalding, scar-inducing hot water, and blends of red and tan makeup.  Very uncomfortable, but it was fun opening kids' trick-or-treat bags with the blade on my index finger.

The flash of the camera ruins the spookiness.  So does my goofy defeated grin.

Creepy

Proving I was always pretty Dark (and apparently hip and cool), despite my horrid faux smile (I have a feeling my mother said something like 'show yer teeth or I'll break 'em.' [it's the only explanation for such a terrible smile]).

Please note the Christmas decorations in the background.  Monsters are all-season, yo.

The girl is a neighborhood friend, probably starting to get scared standing between these two weirdos.

And Close Beside It A Shattered Pumpkin

The last of the family photos.

These are from a Halloween Party where I think I was Mr. Uptight (but dressed as Ichabod Crane) and insisted on a series of Traditional "events," such as bobbing for apples and watching the Charlie Brown Halloween Special (seen below on that ugly awful black and white tv in an era of color television [if you zoom in, you can actually see Lucy and some other gal]).

Ichabod Crane, my brother the Skeleton, and Vincent Von Vampire

Me faking contentment.  I probably insisted that my mother capture this moment on film for posterity.

Mad Monster Party

The first photo from the final few.  In my memory, these guys did not coordinate their costumes.  Though that feels highly improbable looking at this photograph.

I'm not in this one, but I'm definitely in the next one I'll be posting tomorrow.

Halloween Party Of The Century

Getting to the last of the photographs from the past.  Here's one of the final few from a party we had back then.

Thankfully, I'm not in it.
That kid has brass knuckles in the back!

A Pope And A Mexican Walk Into A Bar

You'd probably never see a costume like this these days.  But since I'm documenting my Halloween costumes from the past...

I'm SeƱor Podredumbre de Calabaza.

Salt & Pepper (And Our Dog)

Definitely the earliest Halloween costume photograph in the family albums.  No clue how old we are here.

The Ghosts And Scarecrow Boy

That's me on the left, dressed as the thing I would become obsessed with in the decades to follow...

And I love my brother's monster hands for that Ghost costume (right).

Halloween Horrors

This one has it all going on.  Ghosts, Ghouls (assumption), Devils (with a real store-bought plastic trident), and a paper skeleton on the door... and two baskets of what appears to be chocolate bars (hoping my mother was giving out a name brand or I officially know from where I received my gives-crap-candy genes).

That Year I Was A Mouse

Ugh.  It's important to note that I was technically a Wizard and NOT Mickey Mouse.  And this costume was more of a celebration of the film FANTASIA than a tribute to a Disney character.  A pretty mature thing to do, if I do say so myself.

Great framing, Mom.

Ghouls

I remember wearing that garish skull mask.  Have never seen anything like them in any of the photos I've scoured over the years looking for blog material.  Pretty neat.

I like that we did the sheet thing a couple of times back then.  You also never really see that these days either.  In all of my years handing out candy, I've never seen a rubber or plastic mask on a kid wrapped in a white or black sheet.  Literally never.

I'm officially that old guy saying "Back in MY day we MADE our own costumes, out of rags and scraps!"

2 Ghosts 1 Witch

My dumb dad cut the eye and mouth holes larger to allow us to breathe and see better, because of the number of trick-or-treater deaths and accidents related to not cutting the eye and mouth holes larger.

Satan: Age Five

Got my hands on the ol' family photo albums.

That's me dead center, as Mephistopheles himself.
I remember the costume, and wearing it, but my brain has zero memory of the tinfoil trident I'm holding.
