Old Lady Who Swallowed A Fly

Are kids even allowed to know of a song like this these days?  Like would they sing this now in school?  Curious.

Probably too violent for young children by today’s standards.

Lol we homeschool and heck yes they know that song. There’s this really grotesque version of it in book form called The Little Old Lady Who Swallowed a Pie. It’s a “Thanksgiving” book of sorts. Somehow we ended up with it. She ends up exploding at the end. Kids were memorized. Dunno if it was in a good way or bad. Old school fairy tales and songs had such a gritty truth to them that we believe needs to be remembered. One of our daughter’s favorite fairy tales is the Grimm version of Snow White. Which, if you know it, you know it’s gross with a bizarre ending. I think the twisted fascinates children. Sure we also censor and explain but we don’t when it comes to old songs and books for the most part.

Ten to one school kids don’t know this song nowadays....

There is a very widespread copy of this in book form only instead of dying she coughs all the animals up and then they all become friends. Disgusting. Made even worse by all the lazy find and replace seasonal variants, "There was an old lady who swallowed (a chick/ a bat/ a turkey/ some leaves/ some snow)"!

that is a crazy cool moving graphic..totally hypnotic!!! she's like some kinda voodoo mother goose/witch swallowing all those critters whole. (she compliments your witch girlie in your blog header) i liked the Burl Ives version you posted of this awhile back too. Good Stuff.

feels like kids are Xtra obsessed with pop culture..even more so now than ever. seems like the schools actually let the kids bring a lot of the outside world inside the classroom. there's this "swagger jagger" song..which actually just recycled the melody from.."oh my darling, clementine" omg..it's really the worst tune ever & all these little chicks want to listen to it in music/dance class 24/7. & then there's JoJo Siwa & her bows!!! Gross. ugggghhh

We had that book as kids - we just loved it. Especially the last picture when she swallowed the horse.

Ah, I remember this. Now that I’m older,’ I want to know how they did all the shadow puppets and made her eat everything. Old school......
