HOKUM

Saw this gem of a horror film on Saturday and I keep finding myself thinking about it.  Saying this movie has atmosphere is an understatement.  I was already in love with the film by the time I spotted some delightfully crabby jack o'lanterns above a hotel entrance.  Turns out the film is set during the Halloween season (an added bonus).  Carved turnips and small squash abound.  

Adam Scott was brilliant and I can't imagine another actor in the role.  So glad I saw this in the theater too (was planning to wait for it to stream).

Sci-Phi Film Festival

A local theater had its second annual Sci-Phi Film Fest this past weekend and we made an amazing weekend out of it.  Never EVER thought I'd see CLOSE ENCOUNTERS or ROBOCOP on the big screen ever again.  The festival started out on Friday night with a 35mm print of MARS ATTACKS!, and it's funny how dated that one has become.  Though seeing it with a packed house was a blast.  KILLER KLOWNS FROM OUTER SPACE was the second feature.  Saturday night was bananas with ROBOCOP and SCANNERS.  Based on the crowd reaction, I think ROBOCOP was the highlight of the weekend.  It definitely was for us.  That final scene in the boardroom as justice is served to Dick Jones was incredible -the audience roared and cheered and clapped, and then again when Robocop was asked his name and replied "Murphy."  The event ended on Sunday afternoon with CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND.  Holy moly to see that larger than life was quite an experience.  Seeing it in this setting reconfirmed my often-posted-on-this-blog sentiment that this film is a science fiction horror movie.  The abduction of the little boy Barry, being seen in a dark movie theater, was really powerful (and horrifying).  And the rumble of the massive alien craft rising over Devil's Tower was breathtaking.  

When you see old classics on a big screen, it's easy to remember why going to the movies was such an amazing thing in the past (and why it really isn't these days).  You can feel how so much in these films was specifically designed to be on a massive screen in a darkened theater.  And you can sense how the studios strived to give us something original, something none of us had ever seen before.

This was an extremely intriguing docuseries.  Directed by Joshua Zeman who brought us the amazing Cropsey, the film explores the assertion that serial killer David Berkowitz did not act alone.  Pretty chilling stuff.

The Invisible Man

My recommendations for horror movies are few and far between these years (for obvious reasons [most stink]).  The Invisible Man was one of those rare exceptions where you didn't get to the end and wonder what went wrong with the world.  Rare also was the fact that it was well-reviewed at the time of its release (something that didn't happen with one of my favorite modern horror films CANDYMAN [it didn't stink]).  

We watched this one at night a week ago and I still find myself thinking about it.  I'm posting the trailer below, but, like a lot of trailers, it reveals too much.  So I suppose I'm asking you to trust me (if you're bored and can't find anything to watch).

Bell, Book And Candle

We watched this terrific film last night and I wanted to recommend it to anyone looking to add something a little different to their Christmas season lineup.  It's ahead of its time in the portrayal of witchcraft and the supernatural and loaded with great performances.  Click below to get a brief intro by Sam Hamm on Trailers from Hell.

Trailer: Cobweb

We watched this atmospheric and quite spooky film the other night.  Been seeing a lot of people slagging on it online, and it's baffling.  In a film world where we get horror movies with over-the-top gore, soulless characters, weak dialogue, and terrible CGI, I will never understand how the average horror fan can get so toxic when they see something like COBWEB.  

I would describe this film as a Halloween Fairytale Horror film.  The visuals are wonderful, the characters are interesting, and the scares are really effective.  And an added bonus has the movie set during the week of Halloween.  Lots of Halloween eye candy.

CHRISTINE

We saw this John Carpenter gem last night on the big screen.  Only a handful of people in the theater for this two-night-only release by Fathom Events.  That's not a complaint, but it does make me wonder what kind of earnings are enjoyed by these releases.  

I always wanted to watch Moochie get his due on the big screen, and it was glorious.  And seeing Christine pull out of that garage fully ablaze was breathtaking.  It's easy to forget these things were made for the big screen, so here's hoping Fantom goes through the Carpenter lineup, as it's an odd fact that I haven't seen any Carpenter films in an actual theater during their original release.  Would it have killed my mom to take us to see THE THING?

We Have A Ghost

Haven't really checked any reviews of this Netflix movie, and I don't think I'm going to.  This film dusted off feelings I forgot about.  Feelings I haven't felt since the 80's while watching a Spielberg film.  

We Have A Ghost looked really interesting and fun when I first watched the trailer, and I was PRAYING it'd be something special.  Thankfully it delivered and gave me a nice dose of movie magic.  Loved the cast and the story.  The score by Bear McCreary was definitely channeling film scores from the 80's, but not in a heavy-handed way.  

I can't think of many modern films where I didn't want my money and my time back, so I'm going to savor this for a while.

Growing up in the 80s, I assure you we had much Satanic Panic.  There was always the spray-painted pentagram on the side of a tree or in the ruins of some abandoned building to assure us this stuff was real.  

But you knew you were safe in the daylight.
