Of The Horrifying Kind

After a lifetime of loving this film (even got to see it in the theater as a boy), I caught it on the tv tonight and am now going to come clean - I consider it a horror film. It's terrifying... creepy aliens (and a giant spidery one), screws unscrewing, things coming down chimneys, a child abduction, giant hidden things in Poltergeist clouds, and a chilling musical score.

True horror.

We must of been on the same state of mind.....I was watching it also.

Was channel surfing and I said to my wife...LOOK, I haven't seen that in years! Brought back lots of memories.( Like going to bed afraid they were coming to take me )

Back when I saw it in the theater, the aliens at the end traumatized me. It was in the summer and at night. When we were walking to the car, a thunder storm was rolling in. My evil sister pointed out that the flashing dark clouds were most likely packed with ufo's.

I guess I'd forgotten but it was kind of scary. A couple years after I saw it at the theater my dad and I drove through Wyoming and stopped by Devil's Tower. Actually, it's really out of the way but I wanted to see it more than anything. The movie, as spectacular as it is, doesn't begin to give you an idea of the scale of the thing. It's completely flat around the monument (contrary to the way the movie showed it) and you can see it from miles and miles away. I'd really like to see it again, someday, but like I said it's really remote.

I saw this movie last October for the first time since childhood and didn't remember how terrifying it was. This is totally a fusion horror film (before fusion became the thing to do). Although, truth be told many other great films fall into this category: Alien, Event Horizon, The Thing, The Fly, Scanners and War of the Worlds to name a few.

I think one of the most terrifying parts was the fact that the little boy wasn't scared. As if they had the power to control his mind!

My brother used to watch this movie over and over again... guess that's why I'm horrified of alien movies now *shiver*

At the time this film was made my father was besties with one of the FX artists who built the aliens. As a very young child I have many creepy memories of wandering into a kitchen full of alien bodies, standing on every surface. To this day I am only afraid of spiders and aliens...
