First Pumpkins Of The Season

Saw these happy orange guys in a bin at a local supermarket today.
We brought home the first of many.

Lucky you! Not here in central Texas. It's still blazing hot with another month (at least) of summer.

The moment I see these guys is the moment I know the season has begun.

We were shocked to see them so early.

I usually don't buy mine early. Curious. Pumpkins bought now keep well till Halloween?

We've had a lot of luck with pumpkins bought this early.
They seem to last a few months with no nicks or soft spots. And a strong stem.

Nice! We planted our own this year. All we got though was a vine that is taking over our yard and one pumpkin. *sigh*

Shani,

Did you pollinate the female blooms? We did that and had some success.

Hey Bean! No we didn't. I had read about doing that awhile back and may give it a try still. The pumpkin we have is growing so fast...I can't even believe it. So I think we'd have time to grow a few more at this point. Just have to read up on how to do that again.

Hey Rot, how many pumpkins do you think you guys go through for your Halloween season?

We always carve a couple in the weeks before Halloween, but for the big night we probably do around a dozen or so.

Last year we hung a bunch of small ones in our tree too.

The toasted pumpkin smell is amazing with all that pumpkin meat : )

We always say we wish someone would do a scented candle of that - toasted jacko lid.

I loved your jacko tree from last year!! I've been cutting the pumpkins off the vines for a couple of weeks now. They tend to sunburn in the hot California sun so I put them in the shade on the porch..have given 3 away so far w/many to go.
