I know the end result of most home pumpkin patches are soft squishy malformed pumpkins, but it's fun watching these guys come up. My hope is that I get ONE good carveable pumpkin.

You will!! Probably more than one!
Hey Rot, Shell Hawk seems to know a lot about pumpkin growing.
The kettle jack o lantern should give them something to aspire to ;)
Hey Rot,
I've grown pumpkins in my backyard the last few years and all of them remain fairly small but definitely carvable. Just make sure they get lots of light and water and they should take off!
Just keep them watered and offer them some general purpose vegetable fertilizer once in awhile....and you will have nothing but success....
