Speaking Of Weather...

I realize that anything in the Not Raining spectrum is what we Haunters/Lovers of Halloween want, but if you could hand-pick your weather for Halloween day/night, what would it be?

Me... during the day, in the 50's, completely overcast and semi-gloomy.
At night?  Some clearing, but with large dark clouds floating across a pale watching moon...probably in the high 50's...light wind.

This would work just fine...

Daytime, nothing higher than mid 50’s, slight breeze.
Nighttime, mid 30’s to low 40’s, VERY little breeze.

I have two fog chiller systems I want to use. Too much of a breeze blows it around too much. My yard is really open, doesn’t have side bushes or anything to tone down the wind/breeze. :P

I would say high 60's during the day and high 50's at night so the kids can wear their costumes without coats. Clear skies with a big moon and a light winds - just to rattle a leaves a little.

Yeah. Overcast that day, and light breeze at night. The kind that pushes those big flominbus clouds quickly over the sky.
And stars...

I am with you during the day. Maybe a bit cooler at night, like lower 50’s. I would like occasional breezes. I understand fog chillers, but it was always great as a tot to hear the wind rustling dry leaves.

One of the few things I loved about Oklahoma was the amazing Halloween nights we generally had. 60-65 during the day; warm enough to play and so comfortably work on my haunt. The leaves on the trees were full of colour and many had already fallen, creating “drifts” of dry leaves piling up around everything. The nights were most often in the mid-50s to 60 with just enough wind to make the leave rumple down the dark streets while making that spooky dry rattling sound. There were often huge brooding clouds in the sky both day and night as the weather was about to shift, ushering in the first near freezing temps or the season. It was perfect Halloween for me.

Now my battle is with the rains of the Pacific Northwest. October is generally very threatening with both rain and cold. Halloween is always filled with stress as to wether we will have any people or we end up staring at the cold rain falling.

I'd say if we could pick the weather for Halloween it would be a calm night, clear skies, and in the low 60's for the bulk of the night. We've been doing our yard haunt going on 19 years and for the most part we've been very lucky, but our best Halloween was back in 2003. No rain and I recall how warm it was that night for October 31 in Rochester, NY (historical data says we had a high of 73 and a low of 51 where a high of 54 and a low of 37 would be considered "normal") and that we set up camp chairs at the base of our front walkway and handed out candy sitting outside the entire night. The wind was relatively calm (another rarity) and the temperature dropped in such a way that it created a natural "fog chiller effect" and the fog from our fog machine hugged the ground and we got some great pictures. Unfortunately back then we took all our pictures in low-res on our digital camera that year because uploading them to our website at full resolution would have taken forever at the time. I will post some of those nice fog pictures from our haunt in 2003 on our Halloween blog today.

I agree with you, Rot, but I would like a large yellow/orange moon and a bit of heavy fog in the morning with winds off and on all day. I like to watch the leaves dance.

I would like last year's weather put on a loop, and spun out every Halloween from now until eternity. It was perfection, 60's during the day, 50's at night and only a very gentle breeze blowing up a few leaves. The fog laid low and the ghosts flew without hindrance. The sky was clear as a bell showing a witch's moon, laying on it's side laughing.

The same as your thoughts rot. Just a bit cooler at night. But not like the 30's we've been getting lately. That's too cold!

50s during the day, mid 40s at night. Slight breeze, just to scuttle the leaves a bit.

i don't haunt. but i have always loved & preferred the Fall weather.

i don't care for overcast days. when it's overcast everything looks/feels dirty to me. without sun you don't have shadows. & what's Halloween/Fall without shadows. nothing like the sun streaming across a field of orange/red leaves on an Autumn day. a vast eternity of Fall.

my favourite Halloween boy Ray Bradbury captures it so well in the Halloween Tree...

"And it was the afternoon of Halloween.
And all the houses shut against a cool wind.
AND the town was full of cold sunlight.
But suddenly, the day was gone.
Night came out from under each tree and spread."

& if anyone likes witches...read Ray's.."The Exiles"..where a witch kills an astronaut with a voodoo doll..<333

I’ve thought a lot about what girl6 said about sun and shadows and I think she makes a really good point. One of my favorite times of day in October is late afternoon, as the sun is setting. The sun is shining off the yellow, red, and orange leaves. The shadows get longer and longer as night creeps in. The whole afternoon is this time of anticipation and it always reminds me of the aniticipation of Halloween afternoon, the creep before the horror begins.

So while I like cloudy days, I think I’d have to compromise and allow for some sunlight in the late afternoon as the sun sets to set off those awesome colors and long shadows that you only get in the fall. Otherwise I’d keep everything the same.
