Romulan Ale

Romulan Ale. Why, Bones, you know this is illegal.

McCoy:

I only use it for medicinal purposes.

I finally had the chance to try some Romulan Ale.  My brother got these sweet gifts for Christmas.  The lighter one is a fine vodka while the darker is a really pleasant rye whiskey.  Wasn't expecting something this gimmicky to be that nice.  And of course, the bottles are just an added extra.

Semi-related note:  I shaved my sideburns into points like Kirk up there when I was in high school.  They'll never go out of style, I said.

Kirk Bourbon

The new Kirk Bourbon is a small batch release selected from choice barrels aged between 4-12 years. According to Silver Screen Bottling, the Star Trek whiskey “exhibits a depth and richness seen in only the finest examples of bourbon with notes of caramel, Asian 5 spice and pecan” which is “crafted with the highest respect for the whiskey and for the man that bears its name.”

I'd still feel dumb ordering it or asking for it in a bar (assuming I saw the bottle sitting on a shelf [God, imagine if you ordered it and it wasn't there.]).

Though I'd buy Romulan Ale if they made it. Regardless of what it tasted like.

The flavor draws heavily from the blending of the rye malt and traditional clove character, creating a very rich and unique flavor, a bold beer suited for the harsh Klingon lifestyle.

Soundtracking

Dug out this old favorite - James Horner's score to Star Trek III:  The Search for Spock.  Probably the scariest and darkest of all the Trek films.  The Enterprise gets mothballed.  The Genesis Planet is a failed experiment.  Two starships get blown up - one is packed with Federation crew, the other is loaded with Klingons (so we're happy about that one).  There are horrible Klingon bastards, who take hostages.  Kirk's son is one of those hostages, and they murder him.

It's a dark, slow movie.  And it's my favorite of the series.  And as I listened to the soundtrack last night, I realized that it would never get made today.  It wasn't over-the-top enough.  It wasn't packed with chaotic effects and people running and shouting.

The score was massive.  Ten feet thick in most places.  So you had this giant score put to slow-moving scenes of slow-moving starships and slow-moving drama.  And it worked.  Incredibly. 

I felt kinda sad knowing that there will never be something like it again from Hollywood.  And weird to ponder that most of the cool movies I worship from my youth would never be made today. 

But I felt lucky to have known it.  So there's that.
