I get asked about Johnny Appleseed's headwear more than any other item in my haunting arsenal. I'm happy to report that his hat is merely a fabric witch hat (with a wire in the brim) which has had its point poked inside the top of the hat. Then the hat was spraypainted with a tan rustoleum paint to accentuate the fibers of the hat and to make it hard to the touch.

I had often wondered about that myself... that is a great hat for a scarecrow.
