It may just be me, and I hate sounding like the old-man-yells-at-cloud type, but we really do seem to have lost whatever that 'je ne sais quoi' quality is that's on display there...whatever that blend of horror with a wink-and-a-nod was, or even the very simple 'Boogeyman Around the Corner' vibe.
It's far more than just the shift from practical to digital, too.
For whatever reason, the filmmakers seem to have decided that there is no room for fun? (that's over-simplified, but 'feels' close to the mark)
While I would never suggest there isn't anything good anymore (we seem to be absolutely SPOILED with high-quality 'elevated horror' now), it does just seems like there are very few that understand that some fun / camp absolutely still has a place, and that sometimes it's OK to lighten up a bit and just make pure entertainment without lurching into full-blown comedy territory.
As much as I enjoy that this is an era that can consistently produce things like 'The Witch', or 'Late Night with the Devil', I can't see myself watching them over and over for decades, knowing every line by heart, listening to a soundtrack independently, or setting up annual viewing appointments.
I do wonder where the next 'Fright Night' or 'Return of the Living Dead' can come from, and I'm not sure how many even feel like that's a concern.
Truly brilliant points. I often say of movies that people will not be talking about them 5 to 10 years from now, if even one year from now. I can’t even think of a modern/recent movie that I watch annually. The only thing that really comes to mind is House of the Devil, and that already has some whiskers on it.
Come on, wouldn't you consider the Terrorizer part 2 and 3 films to be in that category? I loved every minute of both films, and I think that Art the Clown is the new face of horror.
Then you really need to watch the next 2 films in the series, it continues a storyline that will end with the 4th movie some time in '26. If you thought the original was brutal, you haven't seen anything yet.

A very enjoyable mashup!

(I wonder if the clouds feel properly chastised?)

I only saw the first one! I must admit to loving Art the Clown...and I agree he's a worthy addition to the horror icon hall of fame.

Roger that!
Agreed!
