Suburban Horror Show

Man, this photo really captures the oddity that is home haunting...  A small dark wonderful world surrounded by a big world of boring life stuff.

I have such a love/hate relationship with the proximity of the real world on the Big Night.

On the one hand, I love it because of the wonderful absurdity of it, and the fact that it's just how trick-or-treating works.

Like most, I get a huge kick out of both watching the kids come down the street in a gaggle, then walk through a suburban pop-up cemetery, and listen to them hoot and holler about it as they head off to the next house.

Nothing else would do, and streets, driveways, streetlights, and neighbors, etc. are all simply necessary ingredients in that concoction.

On the other hand I sure can't stand how reality insists on imposing itself when I'm busy trying to immerse those same visitors!

Looking up from swirling fog, grinning jacks, and flickering lights to be greeted by the dull banality of a mailbox or a passing car is the visual equivalent of a record scratch.

In the end, I suppose there's nothing to do but embrace the weirdness, flip the script, and be the ones imposing ourselves on reality...just like the photo.

You, sir, have a true gift. That is so perfectly articulated.
