Cool effect. The give-away that it's an after-effect is that Roots is mostly out of focus, except in the middle. Since he's vertical, he should have the same focal depth along his height. :)

Thanks so much for this link. I remember someone showing be how to do it in Photoshop awhile ago....after 12 steps, I thought "I don't really need to do this that bad" and completely lost interest :)
