Evil Tree

I love that the Evil Tree prop is a thing in yard haunting.  It pops up every now and again, and it's always huge and intimidating.  The one below is amazing and has the coolest face I've seen on one.

Always great stuff at The Village Mire.

October

I have been younger in October
than in all the months of spring
walnut and may leaves the color
of shoulders at the end of summer
a month that has been to the mountain
and become light there
the long grass lies pointing uphill
even in death for a reason
that none of us knows

And Sometimes Cats

"Yes," she sighed. "I'm one of an odd family. We sleep days and fly nights like black kites on the wind. If we want, we can sleep in moles through the winter, in the warm earth. I can live in anything at all - a pebble, a crocus, or a praying mantis. I can leave my plain, bony body behind and send my mind far out for adventure. Now!"

Into the air, over the valleys, under the stars, above a river, a pond, a road, flew Cecy. Invisible as new spring winds, fresh as the breath of clover rising from twilight fields, she flew. She soared in doves as soft as white ermine, stopped in trees and lived in blossoms, showering away in petals when the breeze blew. She perched in a limegreen frog, cool as mint by a shining pool. She trotted in a brambly dog and barked to hear echoes from the sides of distant barns. She lived in new April grasses, in sweet clear liquids rising from the musky earth.

Exit Autumn

The leaves were gone when the wind returned past sunset, and there was nothing left to do but help the empty branches claw at the sky.

Visions Of Light And Day

Still it follow'd me under the yellow moon,
Looking back to the graveyard now and then,
Where the winds were playing the nighta tune —
But, Kate, a Ghost does n't care for men ,
And your papa couldn't have done it harm!
Ah, dark-eyed darling, what is it you see?
There, you needn't hide in your dimpled arm —
It was only my Shadow that walk'd with me!

Sarah Morgan Bryan Piatt, My Ghost

Wonderful concept and beautiful photos.  I love the notion of capturing that glowing light from a home at night.  Are the people in there watching TV?  Eating dinner?  Arguing?  Laughing?  I love it.

Even cooler is the fact that these were taken by my dear friend Sara.  California is already a kind of mystery to me.  Very foreign and strange to this east coast guy.  But these photos feel familiar.  Like the lonely houses I walk by at night sometimes.  Wondering if the people are asleep inside, and if somebody left the porch light on.  All night long.

The Devil's Tree

Man, I love displays like this.

A little bit of everything, with just a touch of Crazy.

Back Yard

The clocks say I must go—I stay here sitting on the back porch drinking
    white thoughts you rain down.

    Shine on, O moon,
Shake out more and more silver changes.

Underlife

A sculpture by Jason Middlebrook.
When I win the MegaMillions tonight, I'll be buying this for my lawn, and a ton of other things for my insane Halloween mansion.
