Yokai

Yokai (妖怪) are a class of supernatural monsters, spirits, and demons in Japanese folklore. They are not easily categorized, encompassing a wide range of beings, from mischievous spirits to fearsome monsters, and even objects imbued with supernatural power. Yokai often blur the lines between the natural and supernatural, and are frequently featured in Japanese art, literature, and popular culture.

Night After Night

Critically acclaimed film director, producer, and screenwriter M. Night Shyamalan will host an evening to celebrate one of the most successful collaborations between a contemporary film director and a composer—Shyamalan and the Emmy® and GRAMMY®–winner, James Newton Howard. This performance highlights Howard’s haunting scores that became part of the identity of eight of Shyamalan’s eerie, mind-bending thrillers—The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, Signs, The Village, The Last Airbender, and more. Howard will lead Your Philadelphia Orchestra with special appearances by pianist Jean Yves Thibaudet, violinist Gil Shaham, and cellist Maya Beiser in this incredible one-night-only event!

Cemetery For Sale

Welcome to a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to own a piece of Philadelphia's rich history.    The Historic Mount Vernon Cemetery located at the intersection of Ridge Avenue and W. Lehigh Avenue (3301 W. Lehigh Avenue) is now available for sale.  According to the City's survey, the property contains 1,166,987 sq. ft. (26.79032 acres). The Cemetery is the final resting place of numerous famous Pennsylvanians and their families including members of the Drew and Barrymore families, revolutionary and civil war veterans and other prominent persons.  The Cemetery’s entrance sports an impressive, gated archway and associated gatehouse building designed by notable architect and landscape gardener John Notman. The gatehouse building is in shell condition and will require full renovation.    Buyers must conduct their own due diligence to determine whether there is any unused burial land remaining among Cemetery’s over 26 acres.   The buyer of the Cemetery will also receive financial support through restricted plot trust funds for maintaining the Cemetery in perpetuity under the supervision of Philadelphia Orphans’ Court and the Pennsylvania Attorney General.    A copy of the Survey Plan of Property is available upon request.  The Property is being sold in as-is, where-is condition.   All offers are subject to court review and approval. Buyer responsible to obtain any/all municipal certifications, etc.  All information provided is deemed reliable, but is not guaranteed and should be independently verified.

$1,000,000.  I'm thinking of buying.

Hannibal's Table

Last night, we headed into Philadelphia for the Wilds of New England dinner hosted at the Elwood Restaurant.  As huge fans of the strange spirits of Tamworth Distilling, we couldn't resist a menu that boasted oddities like venison scrapple, smoked trout brandy, beaver stew, and green crab whiskey.

The presentation was phenomenal.  The spirits were brilliant and paired perfectly with each of the five courses.  The atmosphere was fun and light, as we all knew we were partaking in some kind of bizarre and peculiar taste-testing.  It felt like the sophisticated Halloween dinner outing I've been craving my entire life (that's a sad sentence).

The neatest part of the evening was talking to the chief distiller from Tamworth.  Hearing about the complex process involved with creating each spirit made each sip something really special.  We also talked with him about his new and yet-to-be-released The Devil's Footprints.  Can't wait to try that one.

The menu:
Venison Scrapple (on antlers), served with The Deerslayer Venison Whiskey.

Green Crab Soup (with a small potato crab cage in each bowl) made with invasive green crabs, served with Crab Trapper Whiskey (also made with the invasive jerk crab).

Trout with brown butter and pumpkin - served with the brand-new smoked trout brandy (with tiny briny roe in the bottom of each bottle).

Beaver Stew, served with Eau De Musc castoreum-flavored whiskey.

Apple tart with caramel ice cream, served with Tamworth Garden VSOP Apple Brandy.

It was a perfect menu and an amazing evening out.

Haunted Attraction: Halloween Nights At Eastern State Penitentiary

Last night we went to the massive and very gloomy Eastern State Penitentiary for their Halloween Nights.  The Philadelphia location is really impressive and the perfect setting for a Haunted Attraction.  The size of the prison allows for multiple haunted houses and various places for food and beverages.  But that same size, I think, makes the Attraction feel a little too spread out inside.  A little sparse in parts.

I also think Lancaster's Field of Screams is a tough act to follow.

We had a great time though, enjoying some terrific drinks and food, and making S'mores over a fire while listening to a Ghoul read poetry on stage (that actually happened).

Below are some photos from Friday night...

Writer, Poet, Editor, Critic, and Philadelphian

I became insane, with long intervals of horrible sanity.

- Edgar Allan Poe

We took a trip into Philadelphia to visit the Edgar Allan Poe National Historic Site.  He resided in multiple locations in the city, though this is the only one that is still standing.  If you're ever in the city, I'd highly recommend a trip there.  The surrounding area is really nice as well and within walking distance of some terrific bars and restaurants.

Very odd to find a smashed pumpkin in the streets of Philadelphia, but we took it as a good omen.

Here's our bounty of the day...
