Now Playing: PSALM005: Amtracks

This is a really fantastic ambient album by Dylan Henner.  Oddly, and I don't just think this is the Christmas Eve talking, it feels extremely Christmas-appropriate.

The Pulley Witch Project

I have been battling this short movie clip for months.  It was created in an obsolete .MOV format and I figured it was gone for good.  This morning I uploaded it to youtube and see if that would convert it into something watchable.  It worked.  Sure, it's only 3 seconds long and shot with a super 8mm camera in the 80s and then converted to VHS tape and then to digital, but it's still pretty neat to watch.

I've blogged about her before, but this Witch prop was the first significant prop that my brother and I built.  He was up in the top window releasing the prop upon unsuspecting kids and parents on the sidewalk below.  Despite the other end of the cord being attached to a lamp post, and despite the cords being bright white, you'd be surprised how invisible the support lines were.  Then, silently and suddenly, a Witch would swoop down and race towards her victims.  He got quite good at this effect and people must have thought they were about to be nailed by this angry creature on a broom.  But she'd suddenly stop as though she changed her mind...  and up she'd go again.  She would rest flat against the bricks below the windowsill, like Dracula scaling his castle.

Small crowds would form to watch it happen again and again, but they always seemed to have the sense to move out of the way and they'd act like they weren't a waiting crowd.  So the gag wouldn't be wasted or revealed to new victims.  Without fail, people would scream and run.  After all, it's not every day a real Witch dive-bombs out of the darkness.

Man, was it neat.

The Shrill

The Dead returned.  Billions of corpses began to move, convulse, groan, and then, quite horribly, shriek.  It was a high-pitched and piercing sound.  The world called it The Shrill.  And it was the extent of their cruelty.  There were no armies of dead, no brain-seeking deceased hungry cannibals.  Just the shouting from frail, weak frames which made no attempt to stand.  Cemeteries around the world became places of the unholy deafening Shrill.  Layers of earth muffled the shrieks, but the sheer volume of the deceased in one condensed location created a terrifying chorus that never stopped.

It was a sunny, windy day in late October.  I stood on the other side of the river across from the city's acres-wide cemetery.  I listened to the shrieks carried on the wind and over the water.  I remembered some lines from an old poem by T.S. Eliot.  He wrote

This is the way the world ends

Not with a bang but a whimper.

The Third

When it came near him, Scrooge bent down upon his knee; for in the very air through which this Spirit moved it seemed to scatter gloom and mystery. It was shrouded in a deep black garment, which concealed its head, its face, its form, and left nothing of it visible, save one outstretched hand. But for this, it would have been difficult to detach its figure from the night and separate it from the darkness by which it was surrounded.

What The Internet Did To Garfield

In the age of short video clips and shorter attention spans, it's really nice to see a youtube video that spans an hour and twenty minutes which has 1.4 million views (so you KNOW it has to be pretty captivating).

The video explores internet art devoted to the Garfield comic strip, as it reveals the truth about the strip itself.  I found myself in a state of incredulousness as I watched.  I wanted it all to be lies.  I wanted Garfield to ONLY be a lasagna-loving ornery (yet loving) orange cat who appreciated his owner, even if he never said it much.  What I got was the ugly truth (and loads of amazing [and disturbing] fan art).
