The Witch

I haven't seen it yet, but I've heard nothing but amazing things about the film and the score.  A bunch of folks have recommended it very highly to me.

Have you seen it?

we ALMOST went on Friday afternoon!

You know you're a hermit when you see something like this coming out in the theater and your first thought is "I wish it went straight to Video On Demand"

awful...
I should be celebrating a movie like this getting a full theatrical release!

Saw it yesterday. Really enjoyed it. The accents got a little rough at times. But I thought it was well done. I was totally cheering for the twins to get theirs. Several in my theater were disturbed by the final scene. I wasn't. (No spoilers!!)

I've been reading FB posts saying just the opposite. Be interested to read your review.

Just...just saw it.

Initial impressions...

You know you are a different type of "haunter" when everyone else you know is crushing something and all I can think is..."Damn that was great".

Music in parts, is more haunting and scary than most conventional horror films in their entirety...period. Set design and costuming is out of this world. I spent much of it trying to push that "how can I recreate this?" nagging to the back of my mind.

I have two minor quibbles but I won't mention them.

My feeling is if you invest in the film and recognize it for what it is, you will appreciate it as I do, but if you are secretly wishing for conventional horror, skip it...it's better than that.

I really enjoyed it. Many folks are bitching about how it "wasn't scary" (i.e., it didn't have tons of jump scares), but that isn't the aim of this film. It is a slow burn type of movie, in the vein of Rosemary's Baby as far as pacing. It isn't full of typical frights, but rather a constant, foreboding sense of dread that permeates every frame of the film. It isn't the type of story that is designed to provide constant shocks, but instead stays with you...you'll be thinking about it long after you've left the cinema. Oh, and the score? Absolutely amazing!

Personally, I thought it was a breath of fresh air for the horror genre, and I definitely plan to purchase it when it hits blu ray.

I want to see it also, but not crazy about the movie theater scene.

Will just wait for it to come to Bluray.

we saw it yesterday!!
felt like a for-evvvver wait too. i won't say anything until more of you guys have seen it. i will say tho, how beautiful it looks & the actor who plays the father has the most tremendous sounding voice.

Can anybody tell me if its worth being spoiled about the final scene everybody's talking about? I usually read spoilers. Will it totally ruin the movie if I know it?

girl6 said...

i'm going to try & take a stab at it but i also don't want to ruin anything for the people who haven't seen it yet.

i had a little trouble hearing the dialogue clearly, it didn't sound crisp to me, i think that's because of the accents mixed with the olde english, i don't think it was necessarily the sound itself. i think the vibe & look of the film ARE perfect. i really enjoyed the actors too, thought they were all perfectly cast & ohhh man, the father is just fabulous in both look & sound. he'll give ya chills, proper ones too. he's SO spot on!

really a GREAT film. the problem i had with it was, it felt more like a collection of folklore tales etc instead of an actual story line. i think that makes sense tho when you read the footnote at the end of the film stating where the content of the film was taken from, like actual records & accounts of the witch hysteria of the day along with the religious struggles as well.

one thing that i really left with & thought about a lot since was, people living in communities as opposed to living by yourself with just your family. both situations look great on paper, but both can be sorta jeopardizing to your sanity & vulnerability. so i think that was a great & even scary question to raise.

the ending scene is just wOw...SO much hardcore beauty overload. on the way home from the theatre i started thinking of "the company of wolves" & just how well that movie combined fairytales with folklore etc & was able to relay it back into a structured story & even hop back into the past & then bring it all forward into the future as well. man, i have sucha crush on the werewolf in "the company of wolves"...hahaha..always think of him.<3

you know what tho..vvitch is a big win, i think.
like oscar wilde once said, beauty needs no explanation..or something like that. vvitch sure IS beautiful..<333
: )

p.s..yeah, i really wanted to fry ypan those twins!!..hahha
i kept thinking how much Thomasin, the main character, looked like a very young jessicaa simpson.

& yeah..watching movies at home Rules!!

I was not disappointed. You will love everything about this film. Mood. Atmosphere, soundtrack, performances. I went to Salem back in 1992 for the Tercentennial and now I want to visit again soon.

My take- Bravo. What the Gill-man says...

girl6- i will totally agree with you. The dialog was hard to hear. My hearing is bad anyway, so I feel like I missed a bit

I saw it last Saturday and was mesmerized. It's a very spare film and absolutely beautiful. There's a lot to process on many different levels and that complexity is rare in most films these days. Don't let that put you off though, it's definitely a very chilling story with genuine horror to please our crowd.

I was concerned at first that the young audience I saw the movie with would grow impatient with the deliberate pace of the film but they hung in there and we made it all the way through with only one cellphone going off toward the end. I will say I overheard some negative comments as the audience departed. My take was that reaction was mixed. That may have something to do with the challenging dialect.

I'm glad I saw it in the theater first to really appreciate the beauty and I would recommend it if you can see it that way as opposed to a first viewing at home on the smaller screen. Either way don't miss it!

Quick note, soundtrack to be released on March 4th. It's already on my list!

Sara..i grew up with a mom that LOVES spoilers, so they don't really bother me. But, i really wouldn't read about or view the ending of vvitch without watching the full movie first, only cause i think this particular ending is a really really big payoff. the visuals are as magical as a quidditch match..hahaha..NOT corny at all, just beautiful & the energy is so exciting, couldn't be better!

Adam..my boyfriend doesn't have the best hearing either & he doesn't think the sound problem is in the mix, he thinks it's the unfamiliarity with the accents & vocabulary. i think it's that, plus, the mix did feel very soft to me. i don't know tho. i'll have to read some sound reviews of the film, see what the tech people say.

girl6 thanks for your thought on that!

Adam, it's cause you're old! :D (had to)

I want a goat...just like Phillip.

girl6 said...

hahahaha..me too. : D

yeah, black phillip is so gorgeous!
& that scene where he's prancing around made think of bean, i thought of her saying, "i spit like a goat"..good stuff..<3

Saw it, loved it. Everything about it. Truly brings the horror of what early Americans thought about witches to life. The hoof...sorry, but the hoof...just perfect. When it comes to DVD a must have for our Halloween viewing collection. The ending just guts you.

Ragged Grin said...

That damn goat was a nightmare...

Been working on a Goat Head prop recently by coincidence. If it jumps down off the post and starts hopping around I'm getting the hell outta there.

girl6 said...

OR..
you would possibly be guaranteed the BEST Halloween Haunt Everrrrrrr..<3

Autumnleaf said...

I wonder why the cloven hoofed crowd got such a demonic rap. Goats are actually pretty cool and pigs are super smart. Now turkeys...I had one that would sleep near the driveway where the trick r treaters walked up. The kids would approach her to see if she was real. She moved her head. You should of heard the screaming.

Rot said...

haha

I blame the pupils...

We're going to most likely see this film tomorrow.

Autumnleaf said...

Will definitely be looking forward to your review!

Probably end with me laying face down in the yard with an unfinished goat prop on top of me, a mass of jute twine, one end tangled in the prop and the other wrapped around my ankle.
