April 20th: Fog Day's Eve

Fitting that we spent 4/20 charring rosemary and filling the house with an earthy herbal smoke.

We wanted to do something fun for the upcoming anniversary of the sinking of the Elizabeth Dane (and Antonio Bay's birthday).  As the new owner of a cocktail smoker, I wanted to come up with something that was appropriate for Fog Day and I think I did it.  Behold Blake's Revenge.  A smoking rum-based cocktail that even has its own piece of seaweed.

Blake's Revenge:
2 oz aged rum (we used an 8 year Barbancourt)
1/2 oz sweet red vermouth
1 Teaspoon lemon & charred rosemary simple syrup
Garnish with a sprig of charred rosemary

After you combine the ingredients above, smoke the cocktail excessively to obtain a miniature fog bank.

Our Fog Day's Eve happy hour needed a dip.

Mrs. Kobritz' Famous Smoky Clam Dip:
1 Tin smoked clams, oil drained
4 oz cream cheese
4 oz sour cream
1 Tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 Tablespoon lemon juice
1 Teaspoon paprika
1 Teaspoon minced onion
Salt and pepper

Mix by hand or blitz in a food processor for a smoother texture. Enjoy with Blake’s Revenge on the 21st of April.

Happy hour came to a perfect close with a viewing of The Fog - perhaps the finest horror film ghost story of all time (definitely up there with The Legend of Hell House and The Haunting [in its own way]).

Long live Blake and his ghostly comrades.  And Happy Fog Day, everyone - the twenty-first of April.

This is great!

I (obviously) already knew what I was watching tonight, but was probably just going to end up with some variation of Old Fashioned...a themed cocktail is SO much better!

Also, I just happen to have a brand new smoker myself (and, it's skull shaped!), so this will be a great way to break it in.

The 'fog' element was already enough to have me hook, line, and sinker, but the 'seaweed' touch is the pièce de résistance...genius!

A skull you say?! haha Must have!
This is such a simple drink, yet really smooth and loaded with flavor. And even with that simple syrup, it's not too sweet. I'd highly recommend that particular rum too. We had it at a local rum bar in a flight and I ran out and got it right after.

A cocktail smoker? I have never heard of such a thing! But you had me intrigued with the mention of seaweed in a cocktail.

Right? haha
The smokers feel like a passing fad, but I'm usually terrible at predicting fads.
They're really nifty and easy to use. Hit some small wood chips with a butane torch and then plop the lid on. The smoke flows downward and the hickory flavor really does linger until the final sip. And it just looks really neat.
I've always loved smoked foods, so this is definitely not a fad in this house. And it's perfect for The Fog.

I agree with you on your list of the top 3 horror movies of all time. The Haunting is the best "ghost" story ever filmed, they manage to un-nerve you without showing you a single thing.
Hell house is also excellent, RIP Roddy Mc Dowell. The remake of the fog has to be one of the worst things I've ever seen in a theater, along with the remake of the haunting. They were both garbage.

That Fog remake was definitely in the top three worst films ever made.
