I tried to keep one from last fall - did not make it past March.
It’s risky business for sure
I managed to keep a sugar pumpkin in my garage on the workbench for several months after Halloween, but it eventually started going bad and ended up in the yard waste bin.
Are you sure they were the bad spots? I have several small pumpkins that are in the process of gourdifying. At first the spots look bad and a little soft, but as they spread they can start to dry up the skin. I just let the mold go until I'm sure it's the kind eating the pumpkin into a pile of goo. Then it's off to the compost bin.

Yup. I just put the last of the '22 pumpkins outside. One from a month ago has seeds that sprouted and are now vigorous looking vines taking off to form this year's orange gold. Has anyone gotten the almost-florescent-looking green mold form in last year's rotting pumpkin?

Loose and gross is not a good sign. You did the right thing. The good kind of mold firms up pretty quickly and then spreads across the surface without deforming the pumpkin.
