Now Playing: The Devil Must Kill

By Cintecele Diavolui.  Such a weird and wonderful song.

Click on the ancient photo of me as Old Scratch to listen to it.

Thinking back over the years, I'd have to say this was my favorite costume.  I mean, it's pretty much the ultimate in Halloween horrors... the top of the food chain in the world of monsters I suppose.  I'm betting I was a very subdued Satan.  One could say 'bashful' (a label often assigned to me by my parents when I was a kid).  There's dignity in silence, I suppose.

I love that the costume designers felt the need to put the Devil's face on the chest.  So the Devil is essentially wearing a Devil t-shirt.  Sorta garish, and not subdued or bashful at all.  Maybe they did that in the event someone wanted to go maskless?  But then it would still look like a kid with a Devil t-shirt on and not the actual Prince of Darkness.

Halloween.  What a holiday.  A small raised-Christian boy out in the streets on a cold last-of-October night, collecting candy from complete strangers.  Dressed as Satan.  Accompanied by a Ghost and a Ghoul.

Just nothing at all like Halloween.

I had one pretty similar (for the 1979 year, I think)

It's been many decades, but I can still mentally 'feel' every single element of those costumes...that danged elasticish-string, the feel of the interior of the mask, how it fit (and cut) around the eyes, that crazy fire-hazard vinyl smock, all of it.

It's a testament to the wonder of the holiday that it's possible to feel such nostalgia and incredible fondness for something that was objectively awful in both design and execution. (never mind pretty dangerous on multiple fronts)

However, I will note that I didn't have such a cool gang, though. Somehow, I always seemed to be going around with kids dressed in some version of super-hero, cowboy, astronaut, athlete, etc. :(

Excellent point about the stamina of Halloween...how it could survive some pretty horrid conditions and requirements. I recall falling pretty hard once due to not seeing a drop in the sidewalk due to my mask's terrible eye holes.

Can't even imagine being a kid now with all of those options available. Literally can be anything you want. And with some pretty high-end COMFORTABLE costumes. I wouldn't trade it though.

I saw a meme today that stated Nostalgia is the suffering caused by an unappeased yearning to return. Not so sure about the wanting to return part... but I'll take the comforting memories of making do with less. Which seemed to leave more room in my head for adoring Halloween and savoring what it gave us.

Or maybe I'm just old.

We're all getting old, it's not just you. I remember wearing those masks as a kid and how hot it would get under it. The elastic band always seemed to pull your hair every time you'd put it on/off.
Nostalgia to me is remembering the things you experienced in your youth that were the happier times you had growing up.

These were the best memories! For me, seeing these old photos really makes me tingly. I always had this feeling on halloween the evil spirits wouldn't hurt me because I was evil, just like them wearing my vampire costume, or Jason, or Michael Myers 🎃🎃🎃🩻

Seeing old photos like this is what puts the fire into my love of Halloween. Great memories. We had that same posable skeleton that's on your door. Classic!
