Canal-O-Ween

We headed off to Yardley, PA yesterday afternoon to hit up a favorite restaurant as we waited for the sun to set.  Last year, we heard about a jack-o'-lantern blaze along the canal that runs through their small quaint town of shops and homes.  Thankfully, Canal-O-Ween occurs the full week of Halloween (it ends on Saturday).

Within walking distance from the restaurant, we headed up a quiet road towards the canal.  The weather felt like Halloween had gone nowhere at all.  We spotted the unending row of pumpkins along the dark canal and joined a slow walk with other observers.  Studying every variety of carved face, the crowd was very quiet, like we were in some kind of strange outdoor museum.  The air was cold and damp, so we bought some hot cider from a small stand along the row of shining pumpkins.  It truly felt like Second Halloween.

So many great faces and carvings, in the most perfect (and dark) setting.

Similar to our Great Pumpkin Walk in Canandaigua, NY (held on a half mile stretch of trail owned by Ontario Pathways). The last prior walk was in 2019 before the pandemic and they still used real tealight candles in the jack-o-lanterns. This year the walk was held again but they used LED tealights in the jack-o-lanterns and the jack-o-lanterns had no real glow and didn't cast much light on the trail like previous years. If you search our blog using the tag "pumpkin walk" you can see how 2023 differed in appearance from the prior years we attended the walk.

Wow that is terrible to hear about LEDs being used. Last night would’ve been a complete letdown without the use of real flames. No magic at all.

That's awesome, did they use candles to light those guys up?

Totally the real deal

I love this! We could do this in Napa along our river walk! But someone would probably come and smash the pumpkins. And they would probably use LEDs instead of real candles because of the fire danger. So, never mind, we shouldn't attempt to replicate this here. Wonderful that it is a success in a little town near you!

If this town ever goes LED, I'm OUT.
